Nightingale Caring Solutions was founded by Colin Plover PhD, MSN, MPH, MSEd, RN and provides nurses in hospitals with a software interface and algorithms that help them staff and match nurses with patients for better outcomes. Currently staffing and nurse-patient assignment decisions are time consuming, stressful, and not evidence-based despite their impact in outcomes. Nightingale's software helps approach these tasks more efficiently by providing a customized interface, automation, and algorithms that inform how to organize nurses in hospitals to achieve better patient outcomes. I was recently asked by a colleague why I'm involved with the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement. At first, it was a curiosity. But, last October, my 22-year-old daughter was hospitalized for viral meningitis, and the hard realities of the current nursing environment came to life in front of me as the family of a patient. As nurses, we've all faced the heart-wrenching decision of whether or not to let our loved ones stay in the #hospital alone. It's not that we don't trust our colleagues, but we understand the harsh realities of a cost-minimization #healthcare system. The pressure to discharge #patients quickly, understaffing, and the focus on efficiency can sometimes compromise the quality of care. We've seen firsthand how easily things can be overlooked, how vital information can get lost in the shuffle, and how patient needs can fall through the cracks. That's why we feel the need to be there, to observe and advocate for our loved ones, to ensure they receive the attention and care they deserve. It's not about protecting them from the nurses but from the potential pitfalls of a system that isn't always patient-centered. We're not just nurses; we're #caregivers, #advocates, and protectors. We're the ones who understand the importance of being present, of asking the right questions, and of making sure our loved ones aren't just another number in the system. This is my "why" for the advocacy work I've leaned into over the past year. #nurses @ #vive2024 was absolutely fantastic. The key message I took away from so many thought leaders on stage: we need more nurses involved in ideation, design, development, and deployment of ALL #healthtech solutions. We also need more nurses on these companies boards and in their C-Suite. Point solutions are not sustainable. Regulation needs to change, and nurses (and other clinicians) should no longer be collectors of {insert your specific data request} be it a stupid regulatory mandate (that was probably written without nursing input), someone else’s desire for data (process monitoring anyone 🤔), or really any of it. Data collection for the sake of data collection does not support the therapeutic provison of care. It is not sustainable, and it doesn’t drive quality. Healthcare requires radical change. We require new payment models. The number of speakers that spoke to the immense challenges to innovate and change broken processes. I heard “blow it up” and start over from scratch. The US Healthcare system is in a bad place, that is unsustainable and requires #radicalinnovation. The solution? #nursingcan #nursingwill #powerofnursing #nursinginnovation

Today, I am not here to brag about an #achievement but to share an #experience. I am here to share a different #perspective and a lifetime lesson that I learnt as a #nurse, as a family member, and as a human. One month ago, a very close person to my heart passed away. I lost someone who kept me going, who had my back, and who pushed me to improve in my academics and in my overall life. He passed away after intracrancial bleeding, seizures, kidney damage, heart issues, and a lot more. Is it that easy to say? Definitely no. Was it easy for him? Definitely no. Was it easy for us as his family? Again, no. But where is the different perspective behind this personal story? As a nurse, I could not save a very close person. As a ‘hero’, I could not. I advocated for his needs, but I couldn’t keep him longer by my side. It hurt a lot. However, this same person used to tell me to move forward no matter what. Today, as I reflect on this tough time I passed through, I ask other healthcare workers in the field: Do you provide your patients with the care that you would like your close family member to recieve? Do you empathise with the patient and his/her family? Do you go beyond your specific nursing or medical practices? Do you treat the patient as a person and not as a medical case? My dear colleagues, take your time thinking about the above questions and the next time you go into your patient’s room, think again: What can you do differently to help your patient? It took me a heartbreak and a loss to think as a family member, not just a nurse. Do not wait up until that happens and take this as your sign. Be there.
