Growing up, I hardly saw healthcare professionals who looked like me. Especially men in nursing – they were like unicorns! 🦄 Even now, though there are more men in nursing, it's still a rarity. Here's a fun fact: in every hospital I've worked in, there's this running joke that all the male nurses are mistaken for each other because we're so few! 😄 But jokes aside, this highlights a bigger issue: the need for more people of color in healthcare. "I watch for the subtle clues - clues that reveal unspoken needs, motivations, expectations, beliefs, and non-negotiables. As we, healthcare professionals, struggle to do more and more with less and less, how often do we pause and ask ourselves ‘what is success?’" Irith Lebovich, MD is spot-on here...and for those that don't know, Irith is the author of Chapter 18 in "Empathy & Understanding in Business" (titled by Christopher Voss.) The chapter is titled "Lifesaving Empathy and Understanding", and in it, she dives much deeper into understanding how important empathy is, and how it can save lives. I have my copy, and I highly recommend it! (Available at usual booksellers including Amazon, under the title "Empathy & Understanding in Business") by Chris Voss.)

Never in my career would have I imagined that I’d walk into work to discover that one of my patients was in the ICU with a self-inflicted gunshot wound - to the head. Weeks after starting dialysis, here was Mr. C. taking his last breath. This pivotal moment in my career highlighted the biggest gap in my medical training at two of the best medical schools in the world with some of the most competent,  compassionate, and respected mentors. The gap? The ability to see below the surface. The ability to read our patients’ unspoken words. How could I have missed this? How did I not see that Mr. C.’s ‘yes’ to dialysis was a ‘no’ to life? I didn’t see it because I wasn’t looking beyond my imaginable - an imaginable based on my belief system and personal experience. Mr. C. could have taken the exit out in a gentler way, but his was a bold message and one that, to this day, shapes the way I interact with my patients. I watch for the subtle clues - clues that reveal unspoken needs, motivations, expectations, beliefs, and non-negotiables. As we, healthcare professionals, struggle to do more and more with less and less, how often do we pause and ask ourselves ‘what is success?’ I am grateful that Mr. C. early on in my career taught me a painful and invaluable lesson. Harnessing every opportunity in your career is not Selfishness Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work across various specialty areas including nursing homes, emergency departments, stroke wards, acute hospital care, nursing management, patient flow units, community health, and with vulnerable healthcare populations. I have also embraced digital technology, integrating it into my personal and professional life, underscoring that nursing extends far beyond the bedside. In my first book “Emerge as an HealthPro”, I dedicated a chapter to exploring 30 entrepreneurship opportunities for nurses. This isn't about moving away from bedside care, but rather recognizing the myriad of possibilities beyond hospital walls. Increasingly, I hear about healthcare systems implementing virtual nursing, and this just happened to be top of mind when I ran across the recent article by Woolley and Gupta (2023) on collective intelligence. I was struck by the importance of collective intelligence in effective healthcare teams, and began wondering how the introduction of virtual nurses could impact that construct. As a result, I took a short foray into the extant literature and shared my findings in the post below.
