In today's complex healthcare environment, having an advocate can make a significant difference in patient outcomes. Health literacy goes beyond individual understanding; it requires a concerted effort from healthcare providers, public health officials, and educators to ensure patients can access and use health information effectively. Nurses are the unsung heroes of patient advocacy and directly impact a patient's trajectory. Nurses - how did you impact a patient's trajectory yesterday? By listening with intent and explaining answers clearly, being sure people understand the response I am lucky to help many patients facing cancer (active treatment into survivorship) fully understand information given by oncologists. Whether I can help them understand how to manage side effects from medications or how to support their mental health, it shows in my actions and words how much I care for their well being. Any support that helps a client is key. Providing what they need as they need it. Listening is my first step. There is and never will be a one size fits all to anything oncology!!

As a nurse navigator I was notified by a PCP that a Stage I lung cancer patient failed to followup with recommended appointments because he was scared. The PCP had an excellent relationship with the patient and his wife but no time to coordinate his further care. She contacted me and I was able to assist in obtaining follow up appts with his medical oncologist, pulmonologist and gastroenterology. Helping patients is my passion
