Did you know?? ➡Leaf-nosed lizard (Ceratophora tennentii) has a leaf-like appendage on the end of its nose. ➡The leaf-nosed lizard , which can be found in the wet tropical montane cloud forests of the Knuckles mountains in Sri Lanka at elevations of 760–1,220 m and has also been recorded in several other forest habitats. There is an endangered designation on the National Red List on Conservation status for this species. ➡These Lizards are slow-moving and arboreal. They prefer to spend the majority of their time on low branches of trees utilizing the sit-and-wait predatory strategy. Adolescents are largely terrestrial. This species is known operate at relatively low body temperatures close to air temperature. Some thermoregulation is managed by basking, often in dappled sunlight. Due to the closed canopy nature of the forest and frequent cloud cover, seeking out open sunlight patches may be too ecologically costly for these organisms. ➡As conservation strategies for this species, areas above 1,067 m (3,501 ft) above sea level were protected and labeled as conservation forests. Cardamom cultivation had to be abandoned in this area. However, rather than natural regeneration, the cardamom range was taken over by invasive weeds such as mistflower and lantana. The story of the Orange River-Karoo region is one of ancient cultures and landscapes. The Orange River is vital for the Succulent Karoo, one of the world’s top 25 biodiversity hotspots. The Nama Karoo and Desert biomes intersect within the ORKCA landscape. Once a pristine habitat enabling the world’s largest animal migration of springbok Trekbokken, surpassing even the Serengeti’s ‘Great Migration’ of wildebeest. The springbok Trekbokken has experienced a significant decline in wildlife numbers due to non-regenerative land-use practices and the effects of climate change. It’s often assumed that the biodiversity crisis means declines in the number of species, overall. But the real problem is the loss of wild species—over the past 50 years, global populations of wild species have declined over two-thirds. North America has lost 3 billion birds since 1970, as ecosystem function and food webs have degraded. Pollution is largely to blame, from nighttime lighting to sewage and runoff, to the balance of gases in the global atmosphere. Focusing solely on species protection is unlikely to resolve these issues. Many of the successes have come where people have cooperated to protect habitat, such as wetland conservation. If you may ask why forests matter for nature? here is a brief answer👇 Forests are home to over 80% of terrestrial biodiversity, including 80% of amphibians, 75% of birds and 68% of mammals. Deforestation of some tropical forests could lead to the loss of as many as 100 species a day. Our ability to stop biodiversity loss is heavily dependent on our ability to stop forest loss. When we take away the forest, it is not just the trees that go. The entire ecosystem begins to fall apart, with dire consequences for all of us. Forests provide habitats for plants and animals, including some of our planet’s most iconic species like the tiger, giant panda, gorilla and orangutan. Habitat loss is one of the main causes of biodiversity loss, as land that once was forest is cleared for other uses. Forest-dwelling wildlife populations (which include mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians) have declined on average by 69% since 1970, with tropical forests such as the Amazon the worst hit.

At Centre4NI, we invest in the restoration and regeneration of overgrazed pastureland into biodiversity rich and edible ecosystems inspired by NI. 📓 We are taking stock of the biodiversity. ⬆ We are creating the right enabling conditions for wildlife to return. 🦅 So we were incredibly happy to observe the Honey Buzzard, a rare and protected bird of prey that feeds mainly on wasps. Here you can see the excavation the large bird made. He was too quick to be captured on camera unfortunately (bird pic @ Alicia Chan). 👉 Given that all our gardens combined could potentially add up to the largest nature reserve on Earth, it follows that part of the solution to the devastating nature-loss worldwide lies in our own little gardens, for those of us lucky enough to have one.
