New jobs are a combination of excitement, mystery, and steep learning curves. Many roles for which we are qualified can also serve as a moment of realization of how much we have grown in our previous position. What skills have we acquired? Which of them will be utilized and further developed in the upcoming season? Joining new teams represents a significant shift. Transitioning from a tightly-knit, cohesive team where members were familiar with each other and enjoyed each other's company, entering a new team can evoke feelings of instant comfort, isolation, or a mix of both. It's uncertain whether one should actively engage by asking questions or take a step back to observe and grasp the social dynamics. I consider myself an extroverted social butterfly, though introverts have occasionally expressed that I can be overwhelming and suggested setting time limits for social interactions. Upon starting this new role, I reconnected with former colleagues. One of them enthusiastically engaged in a chat but humorously remarked, "Okay, that's my Jeremy limit." A new colleague invited me for coffee, another eagerly signed up for the next DnD campaign I organize, and yet another provided me with a list of good focus for onboarding and areas I could largely overlook. While I find myself attempting to log in with my previous work email and missing the light banter in former chat threads, I genuinely appreciate the equilibrium between professionalism and authenticity in the management and the intriguing and kind nature of my team members here. As my wife aptly mentioned recently, "No one likes change, but it's beneficial for us." I agree, emphasizing that I may prefer certain changes over others. First week reflections.. Jumping into a new role is both exciting and nerve-wracking, especially after being away from the office for over two months! Here are my insights: 📚 Adapting existing knowledge and skills to new systems and environments is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole! You know what needs to happen, but it's all about finessing the steps to get there. ⬆️ Transitioning from a top performer in my previous company to a newcomer with plenty to learn. 💆 Taking a breather every now and then and trusting that eventually, all this new info will start to click into place. 📝 Structured onboarding? It's like going back to basics, refreshing old knowledge, and picking up some new tips along the way. 💡 Learning that no question is too small and seeking advice can provide valuable insights. Asking for help is a smart move! 🤔 Reflecting on my professional motivations and the importance of self-awareness. 🗣️ Stepping out of my comfort zone by delivering a presentation to the team on just my fifth day! 🌱 Every day is a new opportunity to learn and grow, and I'm already making big steps to drive the industry in just a few days.
