#hotels RevPAR growth for H1 surpasses 2019 and 2022 levels for top 10 #UK cities #tourism #intelligence Across the board, and certainly in the Mediterranean markets I am looking into now in the Mediterranean Blue Tourism Diagnosis report for IUCN-Med, tourism spending has clearly grown over pre-pandemic levels. The questions are why and what trends these will lead to. Whilst some of the extra spend can be attributed to higher costs of holidaying, an interesting possibility with key sustainability implications is if this extra spending is feeding into a greater tendency towards experientialism ... are travellers 'treating' themselves more on their holidays?

My kids ask me from time to time “why does X cost so much?”, with X usually being some random toy. My answer is always “because someone is willing to pay that much.”As much as we like to point to inflation, rising operating costs and rising construction costs as a reason for higher nightly rates, the fact is hotels can only charge what people are willing to pay. We are in a special time in the hotel industry where people still have residual savings from the pandemic and disposable income, and many travelers are looking for unique, experiential, “Instagrammable” trips. The luxury hotels in many markets are filling this niche and are able to command a premium. #hotels
