At its southern end, Martin Luther King Jr. Way begins at the Port of Oakland, with Howard Terminal to the west and Jack London Square to the east. It’s a mostly gray industrial area, save for the colorful shipping containers lined up at the port, and often surrounded by freeway, port and railroad noise. There are few homes here; their average price is about $605,000. That’s about half as much as the average at the street’s other end, 6 miles away in Berkeley. This artery connects these two major East Bay cities. But the surroundings are vastly different at each end. Traversing the neighborhoods along its path reveals divergent realities in the communities it links. On October 26, 1967, at Barrett Junior High School in Philadelphia, Martin Luther King Jr delivered a speech that emphasised the importance of having a purpose and a plan in life. He encouraged the young audience to aspire for excellence and to pursue their dreams with dedication and determination. He began by asking, " What is in your life's blueprint?" And he continued to say to the learners, "This is the most important and crucial period of your lives. For what you do now and what you decide now, at this age may well determine which way your life shall go. And whenever a building is constructed you usually have an architect who draws a blueprint and this blueprint serves as a pattern, as the guide, as the model for those who are to build the building and a building is not well erected without a good, sound and solid blueprint. Now each of you is in the process of building the structure of your lives and the question is whether you have a proper, solid and a sound blueprint." King used the analogy of constructing a building to illustrate that just as a building needs a strong foundation and careful planning to stand tall, individuals should have a clear blueprint for their lives. He stressed the significance of self-respect, valuing oneself, and having a commitment to academic and personal excellence. King also talked about the importance of having a deep sense of responsibility and a willingness to serve others. From his speech he suggests three things that should be in your life's blueprint. 1. A deep belief in your own dignity, your own worth and your own somebody-ness. 2. You must have as a basic principle the determination to achieve excellence in your various fields of endeavours. 3. You must be committed to the eternal principle of beauty, love and justice. This is a clear call to all young people, that we should strive to do our very best regardless of what may and don't just do it, but do it so well that the living, the dead and the unborn couldn't do it any better. And he ends to say; "Life for me ain't been a crystal stairwell, life for none of us has been a crystal stairwell, but we must keep moving, we must keep going, if you can't fly, run, if you can't run, walk, if you can't walk, crawl, but by all means keep moving."
