It's crucial to acknowledge the unique experiences and systemic barriers faced by BIPOC individuals in their mental health journeys. Let's break the silence, dismantle the stigma, and empower one another to seek the support we deserve. 🔍 Did You Know? WOW, what an invigorating day at the Harkin on Wellness Symposium! The event started with a fireside chat featuring U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. Dr. Murthy spoke candidly about the youth mental health crisis and human’s desperate need for social connectedness. Here are a few of my key takeaways: - Adolescents who spend 3 hours or more on social media per day are at double the risk of depression and anxiety. - We need to workout our “social muscle” just as we do physical muscles. - “The problem isn’t that you don’t have friends, it’s that you aren’t experiencing friendship.” Reach out to others and invest in conversation. I’m excited to delve deeper into Dr. Murthy’s work through his podcast (https://lnkd.in/g8R2gN5m) and book on human connection (https://lnkd.in/gFMaPGwp). Today was a great example of professionals coming together to share research, best practices, and life experiences. I’m hopeful that we are on the cusp of positive change for youth mental health!

This Week is Men’s Health Week Evidence and personal experiences have shown that men, in general, tend to reach out for help with their overall wellbeing, particularly regarding mental and emotional health, much less than women. Several societal norms influence this reluctance. Psychologist David Brannon identified four key Western masculinity norms that many of us in NZ will recognise: 🌸 Men should not be feminine (“No Sissy Stuff”). 👨🎓 Men should aim to be respected for successful achievement (“The Big Wheel”). 🌳 Men should never show weakness (“The Sturdy Oak”). 📈 Men should seek adventure and risk, accepting violence if necessary (“Give ’em Hell”). These factors contribute to higher levels of anxiety, reduced help-seeking, and increased risk of negative behaviours such as substance abuse, violence, and suicide among men. Kiasma wants to help by breaking down some of the barriers that may prevent men from getting the support they need. Using Kiasma, you can get 1:1 support that is 100% confidential, judgment-free and works around your schedule. Mental and physical Health Coaches can talk to you about your concerns and guide you toward the right level of support. Let's change the narrative and support each other in promoting better mental health. Thanks to our partners Umbrella Wellbeing for sharing this insight: https://lnkd.in/g-6WT4Tw To learn more about Kiasma, get in touch at www.kiasma.health

🎉 Happy Men's Health Month! As therapists, we're committed to raising awareness and supporting men's well-being during this important month. Let's dive into some eye-opening facts: 1️⃣ Cis men are less likely than women to seek help for their mental health concerns, which can lead to undiagnosed conditions and preventable suffering. It's crucial to break the stigma and encourage cis men to prioritize their mental wellness. 💪 2️⃣ According to the AAMC, cis men in the United States die by suicide at a rate four times higher than women. And yet, cis men are diagnosed with depression and mood disorders at far lower rates. Why is this? 3️⃣ Men's mental health is often impacted by societal expectations of masculinity, which can create barriers to seeking help and expressing emotions. Let's challenge these stereotypes and celebrate vulnerability as strength. 🌈 This Men's Health Month, our practice is here to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for all men to explore their emotional well-being, manage stress, and cultivate resilience. Together, let's make men's mental health a priority and work towards a healthier, happier future for all. 💙 #MensHealthMonth #BreakTheStigma #MentalWellness #SupportForMen #TherapistPerspective

As we commemorate Mental Health Week, it's essential to spotlight initiatives that promote well-being in the workplace. I'm delighted to share an enlightening article from Benefits Canada, shedding light on how employers can bolster mental health support for their teams. Mental-health practitioner claims more than doubled from 2019-2023. We have seen many organizations develop new strategies that integrate with their core benefits that are proactive in assisting employee's and their families with mental health support. Let's leverage this week to amplify our commitment to mental health advocacy. Together, we can create workplaces where every individual feels valued and supported. https://lnkd.in/e4sEQcdP
