Every parent's nightmare. Today, I'm continuing our celebration of National Interprofessional Healthcare Month with a chilling illustration by the creative George Folz. In most American households, you can find stockpiles of current medications, no-longer-useful-but-not-yet-expired medications, and expired medications. And while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and FDA put out recommendations on safe storage and disposal of medications, as well as guidance on take-back programs, we just don't seem to make this a priority - which of course raises the risk of accidental ingestion by children. In terms of patient safety-focused education, it also seems odd that - in this age of technology - the best approach we have going for us is a sticker on a bottle that most people tend to ignore: "Keep Out of Reach of Children." This illustration comes from "ACCIDENTAL: An Illustrated Case Study," which I co-authored with the talented Jessica Bergsbaken, a clinical pharmacist who specializes in pediatrics. It tells the story of a child who gets into his grandmother's purse and pill organizer while babysitting. Fortunately for this family, all ends well as a result of quick thinking, knowledge of the poison helpline 1-800-222-1222, and a speedy interprofessional intervention. From: Kubes SE, Bogenschutz MC, Bergsbaken JM, Zorek JA. Chapter 6: Pediatrics. In: Zorek JA. Interprofessional Practice in Pharmacy: Featuring Illustrated Case Studies. You said it best, American Academy of Pediatrics! #Pediatricians find success using #socialmedia to connect with and educate #patients. “In this day and age, pediatricians need to be online, right?” said Dr. Baldwin, a general pediatrician at Northeast Cincinnati Pediatric Associates Inc. “This is where information is for our families. This is where they are getting their information, and if we’re not out there, then other people are putting stuff out there.” But what #doctor has time for it?? That’s why we built Social Cascade. We’re empowering medical providers to show up on social media with credible, reliable information. Like Nicole Baldwin, MD said, this is where parents are getting their information. Let’s make sure they’re hearing from the most trusted voice in their parenting village. In honor of #HeartMonth and #BlackHistoryMonth, today we're sharing research on racial health disparities by Children's Heart Foundation Medical Advisory Council member Dr. John Costello. ❤ Race was already known to matter when it came to health outcomes for infants with congenital heart disease (#CHD). In the first year of life, African Americans are 1.4 times more likely and Hispanics are 1.7 times more likely to die due to CHD than Whites. However, no one knew why race affected those outcomes. “We’ve known for a couple decades now that outcomes are worse in minority groups, compared with their White counterparts,” said John Costello, M.D., pediatric cardiologist and director of research for the MUSC Children’s Health Pediatric & Congenital Heart Center at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. “But it really has never been understood why these differences in outcomes exist.” There is now a partial answer to that question, thanks to a joint effort between Costello, pediatric cardiology fellow Stephanie Santana, M.D., and their colleagues at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and Northwestern University. They report in the Journal of Pediatrics that the state of the mother’s health during pregnancy can partially explain the racial differences in outcomes of CHD patients. https://lnkd.in/grx4Hs4x CoxHealth and Mercy recently announced they are working together to expand children’s services for the Springfield region and surrounding communities. The two organizations are exploring new ways to build on the pediatric expertise each provides in a first-of-its-kind collaboration. By exploring ways to elevate children's care and potentially establishing a standalone children's hospital, the organizations aim to create efficiencies and economies of scale of their financial resources with the added potential for increased revenue streams. The involvement of the community in the decision-making process, as highlighted in the recent December 13th forum, reflects a commitment to aligning healthcare services with the community's needs and a focus on patient satisfaction and loyalty, both of which are critical factors in healthcare finance. Ultimately, this collaboration sets a new precedent for innovative approaches to healthcare delivery that have child wellness, financial sustainability and community engagement at their core. #HealthcareFinance #InnovativeHealthcare #CommunityEngagement #PediatricCare #ChildrensHealth

🚨 NEW MODULE: Increasing Immunization Confidence 🩺 Designed to help healthcare professionals navigate one of the most critical and challenging conversations: discussing immunizations with parents. Created in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the module is all about enhancing those essential skills we can't afford to learn on the job. Healthcare staff and students will learn how to: 💡 Foster a culture that builds confidence in immunizations. 💬 Initiate conversations with a strong, presumptive recommendation. 🩵 Use empathy and motivational interviewing to address concerns. 🫂 Customize communication strategies to suit different individuals and situations. Talking to parents about vaccinating their children demands impeccable active listening and sometimes de-escalation skills. It’s a high-stakes conversation that needs practice in a realistic, high-pressure environment—something that's not typically covered in standardized patient simulations. Recent findings from the Cardus report on #PediatricPalliative Care in Canada highlight crucial intervention points that demand attention. We must advocate for more robust training programs, better funding for pediatric palliative care services across all regions, and increased awareness efforts to dispel myths surrounding the nature of palliative care. These intervention points are essential for shaping a system where timely and effective palliative care is a readily accessible service for every child and family in need. 🔗https://ow.ly/YVkW50RwY81

One of the most noteworthy discoveries pertains to the discernible discrepancy in the perception of quality of life between children and their parents. This disparity underscores the importance of considering both the children's and parents' perspectives when assessing the quality of life in the context of pediatric palliative care. Furthermore, it emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive approach to ensure that children receive adequate support and care, thereby enhancing their overall quality of life. 📝 Explore the complete article:

🔬 **Understanding Long COVID in Children and Adolescents** 🧒💡 While most research on long COVID (PASC) has centered on adults, there is a pressing need to understand its impact on children and adolescents. This complex condition requires thorough investigation to uncover the underlying mechanisms in pediatric cases, which will be crucial for guiding future treatments. As we advance in our knowledge of PASC in younger populations, we can better address and manage the long-term effects of COVID-19 on children's health. #LongCOVID #PediatricHealth #COVID19Research

Access to specialized #pediatric emergency services can lead to better health outcomes for children, but this access is becoming more scarce. Most hospitals with specialized pediatric services are in large cities, leaving rural areas and smaller cities with limited or no access. This care gap is exacerbated by hospital systems that are moving away from the business of providing definitive care for children who need hospitalization. In the latest Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute President’s Message, President and Chief Research Officer Patrick Seed, MD, PhD, introduces us to Ken Michelson, MD, MPH, an attending physician in our #emergencydepartment and an investigator whose big data #research is generating insights into the drivers of this progressive concentration of pediatric expertise within large cities, the effects on health outcomes of pediatric patients, and potential solutions to ensure that all children have access to pediatric emergency care. https://lnkd.in/d3uqMCdv #healthcareaccess #pediatricresearch #childrenshealth #emergencyservices #emergencymedicine Ann & Robert H.
