He gives us everything we need for victory. When difficult things come, things we don’t understand, God uses them to develop our character. We were created to confront our fears and live in His peace. If we stand in faith, letting Him fight our battles no matter how bad things get, we will come out better than we were before. Difficulties will come; pain is a part of life. Keep the right perspective. In those tough times, God is getting you prepared. If it was too much, God would turn back the intensity. Quit telling yourself that you can’t take it. You’re not weak. You are well able. Many of us have been facing battles that nobody knows about —battles of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Every delay, the setbacks, the disappointment, that didn't stop your dream. It's all a part and Joseph's brothers, they were jealous of him. They threw him into a pit. They were going to leave him there to die but they saw this caravan coming by and they ended up selling him as a slave. Year after year, Joseph worked for Potiphar, kept a good attitude, kept being his best. But one bad thing after another happened to Joseph. Potiphar's wife lied about him, falsely accused him. He was put in prison for something he didn't do. He spent years there. One night, this Pharaoh had a dream. He didn't understand what it meant and Joseph was able to interpret that dream. Pharaoh was so impressed with him, he brought Joseph out of prison and put him in charge of the whole nation, just like Joseph had seen in his own dream. Years later, there was a great famine in the land. People were desperate, trying to survive, trying to find food. Joseph was in charge of the food supply, one of the most important positions of that day. His brothers, the same ones that threw him into a pit, they traveled a long distance and showed up at the palace looking for food. They were right before him, bowing down but they didn't recognize who Joseph was. These are the brothers that betrayed him. These are the brothers that caused him all the heartache and pain. You would think Joseph would be angry, bitter, vindictive. He didn't remember the betrayal, the lonely nights, the times he was confused. He remembered the promise. He remembered what God had spoken to him. Now, all these bad breaks, it looked like Joseph missed his destiny. The whole time, God was directing his steps, leading him, guiding him. Confessions of a First Gen Investor Today, we want to talk about Robert (name has been changed to protect the innocent). Robert has a good job in construction. He is near retirement and used to own some mid-size multifamily assets. He sold the assets and made some money, but he didn't love the amount of work it took to keep the assets doing well. He took his money, stuck it in the stock market, and tried his hand at other entrepreneurial ventures. Some went well...others didn't. He understood how businesses worked… He just didn't want to do so much work. Enter real estate investing as a passive investor. After meeting with us and setting up a plan, Robert now has a few streams of income from his real estate dealings. He lends out money as a private note lender. He is able to fund other people's projects while owning the first lien on the property for people who have a track record of successful flips in great metro areas. He is also in a syndication which is paying him cash flow quarterly AND growing in an appreciating asset. Robert’s issue was that he wanted to gain truly passive income. After a few discussions about his goals, risk tolerance, and helping him understand how we can work together, he placed his first investment and it was odd to the races with the next few. The important thing here is to understand that passive income IS possible. There are a lot of people with different backgrounds who have taken the steps needed to move into the real estate investing space. Thank you, Charlie Munger. The legendary investor, Warren Buffet’s business partner, and one of the most intelligent humans ever to live would've turned 100 last week. Sadly, he passed away a few weeks before his birthday, but he left behind an incredible legacy and impact. We owe Munger and Buffett a great debt of gratitude for influencing our thinking many years ago when we were researching, developing, and building our investment strategy at my advisory firm. These are powerful statements, but how does this translate to real life—real clients, families, and people we work with who have their own hopes, goals, and aspirations? According to the Asset Risk Consultants (ARC) database of portfolio managers, the chart below shows that our company has consistently outperformed most of our rivals. We’ve done this without armies of analysts with PhDs or teams of smart economists. How can this be possible? It’s simple: we adopted one of the other observations that Charlie Munger shared many years ago. 𝗔 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘁'𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 The brilliance of his letters lies the perfect mental model: they were written with a very special reader in mind—his sister, Bertie. Buffett shares, “In visualizing the owners that Berkshire seeks, I am lucky to have the perfect mental model, my sister, Bertie.” He went on to say that his sister is smart, sensible and nobody’s fool—but isn’t ready for a CPA exam and doesn’t consider herself an economic expert. With this approach, his letters are not only profoundly insightful, but also incredibly accessible, without any unnecessary complexity. This year, he finally reveals the most critical information about Bertie. Bertie has absolutely crushed it in the stock market. Here’s what he said, “Bertie – yes that Bertie – spent her early formative years in a middle-class neighborhood in Omaha and, many decades later, emerged as one of the country’s great investors.” How did she do it? Bertie Buffett started becoming active in the financial markets in 1956 and for the next 20 years, Bertie held bonds, put one-third of her funds in a publicly-held mutual fund and traded stocks actively. Then, in 1980, at 46 years old, without any prompting from Warren, Bertie made a pivotal move. She decided to sell off everything and owned only the mutual fund and Berkshire Hathaway stocks, both diversified in nature, and made no new trades during the next 43 years. During that period, she became extremely wealthy, even after making large philanthropic gifts (nine figures). Turns out, Warren isn’t the only Buffett who became wealthy from the stock market. The story of Bertie Buffett reinforces several timeless investment principles: 𝟭. 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆: Portfolio activity doesn’t always translate into stock market performance. You want to be lazy when it comes to portfolio activity, which is counterintuitive to most things in life. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: Starting early (or living a long life) for a long runway for your investments to grow is critical. 𝟯. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼: A mutual fund is diversified in nature, and Berkshire Hathaway itself is an umbrella of great businesses, both private and public. It is worth sharing Bertie Buffett’s story because it shows that we don’t necessarily need to overcomplicate investing to build wealth in the stock market. The majority of people would do perfectly well by regularly investing in low cost index funds. As Buffett remembers as Charlie Munger as the architect of the Berkshire Hathaway which Charlie and Warren turned it into a US$ 785 billion investment giant. Everyone remembers Charlie as a honest guy who is very blunt and who is also against the Wall-Street guys. 🔍𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜? Consider Ben and Joey’s investment journeys to see compound interest in action. Ben started investing at 21, contributing $2,400 each year until he was 30, 𝙩𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 $𝟮𝟭,𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙. Joey began at 30 and continued investing the same annual amount until age 67, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 $𝟴𝟴,𝟴𝟬𝟬. Shelby Cullom Davis got his start in the stock market in the early 1940’s on the heels of the Great Depression. He bought equities on the cheap at a time when other investors had given up on the stock market and just as the United States emerged as the world’s most dominant and dynamic economy. Davis eventually made it onto the list of the Forbes 400 richest Americans in the 1980’s. To this day, his grandsons manage billions of dollars for the Davis family of mutual funds. I recently read the book Davis Dynasty: Fifty Years of Successful Investing on Wall Street. Biographies are a fantastic way to peer into history, and it’s particularly interesting to tour the ups and downs of the 20th century on the shoulders of one of the best stock market investors of that era. Davis was able to amass an incredible amount of wealth not only because he was an astute allocator of capital, but also, as his wealth took off, he never strayed from his relatively frugal lifestyle and spending habits. One of the anecdotes from the book that has stuck with me is a scene where Davis teaches one of his grandsons about the power of compound interest. As they’re walking down the street in New York City, his grandson asks if he can borrow $1 to buy a hot dog. Davis refuses and explains that if they were to forgo the hot dog and instead invest the money, that dollar would compound in the market and be worth far more in the future... ...continue reading on our website below:
