Our performance scorecard uses 12 key indicators to show us how we're doing as an organization so we know where we can improve. One of these indicators is: "Support people to think bigger and differently." Communities in our region can be as strong as the people in them believe they can be. That’s why we want to take every opportunity to encourage people to think bigger and think differently about what is possible. We also know that applicants spend a lot of time and energy to submit their proposal to us. We're glad that 99% of Bush Fellowship applicants say the application process helped them to think bigger and think differently. We want to keep up that rate and to shift, so more of them find it “extremely” helpful. We're doing a five-year strategy review of the Bush Fellowship this year and will be considering lots of ideas to improve the applicant experience. Learn more about why this key indicator is important to us: https://bit.ly/49fus05 * Source for chart: Bush Fellowship Application Survey, September-October 2022

Of all the major geo-political events, the most interesting one to watch out for will be the evolution of Europe or the European Union over this century.

Every walk of life and knowledge has been clouded by the West/North contributions to the detriment of generous contributions by the East/South. The scholars from the East/South need to realise that progress cannot be achieved unless we start taking pride in the historical contributions by this side of the world, and restore our roots in enquiry, research, and innovation. Learning from the West and connection to the roots, may lead to sustainable transformation and the renaissance.

Analog Astronaut | PhD Researcher in Space, Sustainability, and Climate Change | Founder of Jordan Space Research Initiative and Palestine Space Institute
As 2024 begins, I find myself reflecting on the year that has passed. Usually, the beginning of a new year is a time for celebrating achievements and setting new goals, but this year feels markedly different. My heart remains heavy with the ongoing genocide in #Gaza, where my people are enduring unimaginable hardships. Heading into the final year of my PhD, I feel no excitement or anticipation. To be quite honest, I feel completely numb. It's hard to feel a sense of accomplishment or look forward to the future when such a grave injustice persists. Everything seems completely trivial by comparison. I've always believed in the power of knowledge and innovation to create a positive impact on the world. However, the stark contrast between my work and the reality in Gaza has left me questioning the impact of my efforts, the very fabric of our societies and the industries we are a part of. How can I claim that my research is contributing to a better future when our world is so deeply fractured? A few years ago, during an interview, I said that if you wanted to make a difference in the world, you should probably become an engineer. I truly, wholeheartedly believed that statement when I said it. In the years since, my perspective has completely shifted. For what is a successful career if not driven by deep morals and strong ethics. What is the point of advanced technology that only gets used to exacerbate systems of oppression? The ongoing genocide in Gaza, its complete normalization in the international community, is a stark reminder of our world's injustices. It challenges me to think deeply about the purpose and direction of my own work. In this moment of introspection, I am grappling with these difficult questions, trying to find a way to align my professional aspirations with the urgent need for peace and justice in our world. This internal conflict has led me to take a significant step in the past few months. I began working on the Palestine Space Institute, a think tank that aims to bring meaningful change and address some of these overwhelming issues. For me, it embodies the spirit of not shying away from difficult problems or questions. I hope that PSI can stand as a testament to our unyielding commitment to making a tangible difference in our world, the only way I know how - by challenging the status quo, and creating communities for others who feel the same. I invite you to register your interest on our website if this is a community you'd like to be a part of (tiny.cc/palestinespace), and I invite you to read my article on Space and Palestine to learn more about the kind of issues we'd like to address (tiny.cc/ps-space) I hope you will join me in advocating for justice in all possible capacities, regardless of your field of work. We are all part of our one home planet Earth, and we must act accordingly. May this new year be the start of a peaceful and just future for Palestine, for all of us. Let's make it count.
The Palestine Space Institute (PSI) is a pioneering and visionary think tank that stands at the forefront of space ethics and the responsible use of outer space. Established with a mission to advocate for the peaceful and ethical exploration of space, PSI is committed to decoupling defense from space, safeguarding space technologies and applications, promoting the demilitarization of space, and using space to advocate for social justice and the Palestinian cause. Stay tuned to learn more about our mission. If you'd like to be a part of it, you can now register your interest for our upcoming fellowship program on our website: https://lnkd.in/gKxK24Bk
