On World Environment Day, we acknowledge that we all have the responsibility to do our best for the environment and continue towards a sustainable future. At the Eye and Ear, we have joined 12 other health services to create the Transitions to Sustainable Health Systems consortium through the Monash Sustainable Development Institute. This group will focus on identifying priorities and practical actions that the healthcare system can take to accelerate emissions reduction and we look forward to working together with these groups towards tangible outcomes. #worldenvironmentday

Both proud and maybe still a bit surprised by the publication of our recent analysis published in The BMJ, which explores the integration of environmental sustainability into healthcare quality frameworks. 🔔 This publication may signal that environmental considerations are becoming a part of routine discussions among clinicians and public health professionals. ❓ Could this be an indicator that we are moving toward large-scale health policies that consciously include environmental impacts in their decision-making processes? I’m happy to share this recent article in the BMJ. Environmental sustainability in the health system has attracted recent national and international attention but real progress has been uneven.  We argue that making environmental sustainability a component of health system quality, and incorporating it into health system quality frameworks, will support environmental progress by: ➡ Recognizing this topic as a health system priority on par with other goals rather than simply a “nice to have” ➡ Embedding environmental sustainability into work from existing groups that ensure quality such as healthcare inspectorates, funders, medical associations, and patient organizations ➡ Providing a multi-priority perspective useful in decision making around sustainability interventions An example of how this integration could work in practice is provided using the high quality health system framework. https://lnkd.in/eukU5ef9 Matthias Brunn, Margaret Kruk, Dionne Sofia Kringos - Pereira Martins,

Caring for the earth is integral to supporting healthcare in our time and for future generations. This commitment to sustainability is central to our Catholic Mission at SSM Health. We are heartened by the many hospital and health system professionals who supported the Joint Commission’s launch of a voluntary certification program on sustainability. Dr. Jonathan Perlin, president and CEO of the Joint Commission, reports that interest in the new certification program is generating inquiries every day, including one framed as a New Year’s resolution. We agree with Dr. Perlin: health systems are realizing that environmental preservation is an essential aspect of caring for patients sustainably.
