In recent years, Medicanes (short for “Mediterranean hurricanes”) have affected the Mediterranean basin causing several damages and even some casualties. In our latest study, recently published in Nature – Scientific Reports (https://lnkd.in/dpcN_CKW), we have detected a drop in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) occurred before the formation of each Mediterranean hurricane from 1969 to 2023. This characteristic has not been observed in intense extra-tropical systems, and it may provide not only a useful fingerprint for distinguishing Medicanes from common seasonal storms, but also an important indication for the early warning of potential Mediterranean hurricanes. Nothing to worry about but something to be aware of happening in the tropics: A well-defined tropical wave is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and the southwestern Atlantic and northeastern Caribbean. A tropical depression is likely to form this weekend or early next week over the eastern Gulf of Mexico near Florida, according to the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center. Look where Nigel is and even in the tropical phase at 41 degrees north over cold waters, what produces a tropical hurricane at that latitude? Well, a contribution of heat is the balance of the atmosphere in action, bringing heat from the tropics to near the poles, if this balance did not exist the poles would be even colder. By the way, the North Pole melts faster because it receives more heat than the South Pole, which is further away from the continents and receives much less heat from the tropics. Almost no hurricanes arrive near the South Pole.

A paper, published in Atmosphere MDPI, explores the link between warm oceans and typhoon intensification. The research, mentioned in Forbes, emphasises how warmer waters can fuel tropical cyclones, possibly contributing to Idalia's rapid intensification and severe impact on Florida, USA. The study details how warm ocean features, like eddies, can amplify heat transfer from the ocean surface and moisture convergence in the storm's core, leading to stronger updrafts and increased intensity. It won’t come as any surprise when April is declared the 11th hottest month in a row at ~1.62 above pre-industrial, yielding a last-12-month figure of +1.6. Continued breaking of Sea Surface Temperature records are cause for even more concern though. El Nino is waning. As the inset shows it was very much weaker than the 2015-16 event and is forecast to enter the neutral phase in the next few months (the orange line is to the end of March). It looks like global Sea Surface Temperature didn’t get the memo though. Until now, the trend has been very close to the 2015-16 trend, just hotter. In the last month however, when a drop is expected as El Nino cools, the global anomaly has remained stubbornly high, even climbing again above 5 sigma.  Surely a drop is expected in the next few months, but with the anomaly mainly coming from northern ocean basins, now heading towards summer, maybe not.
