Expression of interest have now opened on the Swarmer platform for Food2Soil. Food2Soil is Australia's first fermented biofertiliser made from commercial food waste diverted from landfill.  Food2Soil was founded by 2 amazing Female Founders and they are looking for support from the investor community. My heart was pounding all morning knowing this news would go live. But I was struggling to figure out why. Was I nervous that the angle would be somehow negative?  Was I afraid that our transparency in sharing our fundraising "out loud" would be twisted against us?  Was I just excited? I tried to meditate. To journal. But I couldn't figure it out. Then it hit me. I didn't want to celebrate. Sure, hitting first close, especially in current conditions, is huge.  I'm proud of this milestone.  I'm thrilled to be welcoming so many new and returning investors to Fund II.  And I'm super excited about what it means for our mission at Tenacious. My hands were shaking because celebrating feels inauthentic when we have so much more work to do. Not just more money to raise ("always be raising!" is just a fact) or more to prove. More IMPACT to be had. More companies solving climate challenges in agri-food to fund and support. With this framing clear in my head, and the mission front and center, I could ask myself: well, what would feel authentic? That's easy! It feels good, fantastic even, to celebrate the impact we've already helped to catalyze. RapidAIM Pty Ltd launching game-changing products to optimize pesticide use, and deploying on farms in several countries with some of the biggest players in their space. GOTERRA proving out their first-in-the-world model and vision - again and again - with new partners like the City of Sydney and Skretting. SwarmFarm Robotics bots farming over 4 million acres fully autonomously and sending their first robot to the US. Cutting input costs and improving farmer's lives. Jupiter Ionics announcing world-leading scientific breakthroughs in green ammonia, championing a new future for green fertilizer. We don't just back software companies. We don't just back men. We never compromise on impact or commercial ambition. The sacrifices these teams have made to bring their visions to life - not just on paper where valuations are calculated but in the lab, on the field, in the shed... in the real world! - is what I want to celebrate. Systems-change is never linear, never easy, never without cost. But it's what we urgently need to combat the multi-billion dollar realities facing our agri-food system. And more challenges are coming. It's going to get harder, more complex. We couldn't back these companies without the support of our investors. So, here's to first close. 🚀 Today we talk about Incapto, the Spanish startup working with small coffee farmers around the world to promote sustainable and fair trade consumption of coffee and offer an alternative to capsules. Lanched during the pandemic, the stratup focuses on production models that combine fair trade and responsible agriculture to preserve traditional agroforestry models and curb the consequences of climate change. Every year, in fact, 80% of the coffee capsules produced end up in landfills, underlining the importance of sustainable solutions from both an environmental and human perspective. With the aim of supporting its entry into the Italian market, Incapto launched an investment round in which the Azimut Eltif Venture Capital P103 fund managed by P101 also participated. The resources raised will allow Incapto to continue its growth path by promoting the transition to a better and more sustainable coffee for the planet, consumers and farmers. Food VC Peakbridge has new $187M fund to transform future of food, like lab-made cocoa | TechCrunch Climate change is not just about removing carbon from the atmosphere or making more fuel efficient cars. Οne of the top pain points for farmers across the globe is weeding. In a global survey conducted by the Weed Science Society of America, weed management was identified as the most significant challenge faced by farmers, with over 80% of respondents citing it as a major problem. Another study by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated that weeds cause an average yield loss of 10-15% in developing countries, with some cases reaching up to 50% loss, while in the United States alone, the annual cost of weed control and crop losses due to weeds is estimated to be around $33 billion, according to a study by the Weed Science Society of America. The main reasons that weeding is such a huge problem are 1. Labor Costs: Manual weeding is time-consuming and labor-intensive, leading to significant labor costs for farmers (if they can find the hands!). 2. Herbicide Resistance: The widespread use of herbicides has led to the development of herbicide-resistant weed populations, making weed control more challenging and costly. 3. Environmental Concerns: The excessive use of herbicides can have negative environmental impacts, such as water pollution and harm to beneficial insects and wildlife. 4. Crop Yield and Quality: Weeds compete with crops for resources, leading to reduced crop yields and quality if not effectively managed. A Greek startup called Terra Robotics, is venturing out to solve this problem using autonomous robots with laser guns - now how cool is that? I couldn't be more thrilled to participate in their pre-seed round as an angel investor. I first met Konstantinos (Kostas) Kandylas in thessaloniki about a year ago at EBAN, and his pitch immediately caught my attention. Fast forward to today and many zoom calls later, their pre-seed round is finally in the books, and we're all excited to see what the future will bring! Also extremely happy to join an amazing group of accomplished investors from HeBAN - Hellenic Business Angels Network (Association) like Lisa Katsouraki and Thanos Papangelis in this round - and hopefully the next! As an angel investor, it's not often that you find the perfect storm of team, product and market for an unmistakable bet, and I really believe this is one of them. Terra's mission of solving the no1 pain point in agriculture (weeds) is an ambitious one - but who wants easy goals? :) Onwards!
