I love to see good news on a Friday. Join me in welcoming Jalal to safety. In Iraq he faced imprisonment just for being #gay. 🌈

Moving into a safe house for #LGBTQI people seeking asylum can change the course of a person's life. Jalal is from Iraq where it's illegal to be gay, and same sex relationships are punished with 10 to 15 years in prison. He has just moved into Micro Rainbow safe housing, and it's the first time he has been able to live somewhere openly as a gay man. His housemates are other LGBTQI people fleeing persecution. The incredible support of our allies means that when a new resident like Jalal moves into a Micro Rainbow safe house, we can give them everything they need to start afresh. This includes brand new bedding, towels, and much more. Want to support people like Jalal from Iraq? Become an ally now, or send something from the wish list! https://lnkd.in/eGYZfUt

  • Welcome to your new home Jalal!
  • Jalal is a gay man from Iraq, and he has just moved into Micro Rainbow safe housing.
In April 2024, Iraq's parliament passed a bill criminalising same-sex sexual relationships with jail terms of between 10 and 15 years. Even before the passing of this bill, Iraq was far from safe for LGBTQI people. The Iraq government has maintained an anti-LGBTQI stance since gaining independence in 1932 where homosexuality was officially banned. This would be expanded in the IRCC Resolution 234 of 2001 which would punish sodomy, or any homosexual act, with the death penalty.
  • Now Jalal lives in our safe housing for LGBTQI asylum seekers, he is safe to be himself.
He can live openly and attend Micro Rainbow activities alongside his LGBTQI housemates.
