Workforce shortage is everywhere for semiconductor industry. It has many causes: from low birthrate, high cost living and not matching salaries, better carrer path in software industry like AI/ML/LLM, and better balance between personal life and work, especially when you can work remotely from home. Now, that also shows that Sam Altman's fantaisy search for $7T to built up semiconductor Fabs fro AI chips makes absolutely no sense since there would be noone for working in these Fabs...

U.S. Semiconductor Jobs are Making a Comeback Recent Hiring Trends: In the 2000s and early 2010s, the U.S. semiconductor industry saw a decline as many firms moved production overseas for cost reasons. Job losses averaged 13,400 per year until 2009, with employment dropping below 1990s levels. Throughout the 2010s, employment remained stable at around 180,000 to 190,000 jobs. Recently, U.S. semiconductor companies have focused on legacy chip manufacturing, while advanced chip production has shifted overseas. Future Hiring: Looking ahead, with the substantial U.S. government funding in semiconductor manufacturing, there is a strong outlook for hiring in the coming years. The CHIPS and Science Act, offering $39 billion in direct incentives, aims to boost investments in domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Since 2022, the industry has seen over $200 billion in manufacturing investments, spanning specialized analog chips, leading-edge logic chips driving the AI and smartphone sectors, and critical upstream supply chain components.
