I’ve worked in the Superyacht Sector for 30 years... These are some of the most common chats I’ve had as a yacht manager, and more recently, questions as a mentor I’ve had from Captain’s and senior crew: •⁠ ⁠How do I establish a business ashore? •⁠ ⁠How do I transition my career from ‘ship to shore’? •⁠ ⁠How can I generate a passive income whilst still working on a yacht? •⁠ ⁠How can I ensure my family is happy at home while I am working abroad? •⁠ ⁠How do I manage the owners' expectations when we disagree, without losing my job? •⁠ ⁠How do I structure my responsibilities with shore-based management and owners? Without a clear direction, unanswered questions like these can make you feel isolated and uncertain on what the future holds. I’ve experienced these challenges as crew, yacht manager, owners rep and business owner first-hand and have learned many lessons along the way. Now, my role is successfully guiding others on a similar path. Remember: Anything worth working towards has challenges and failures along the way, it’s not easy, but it’s always going to be worth it. 👋 Leaving Your Yacht Job: Do's and Don'ts Whether you're looking to grow your career or feeling unhappy with your current position, here's a quick guide to quitting in a professional manner. ***Remember, these suggestions may vary based on circumstances; prioritize your safety if needed. 🔵 Do: 1. Schedule a Meeting: Arrange a meeting with your captain or head of department. Avoid casually dropping the news, as this ensures a respectful and clear conversation. 2. Provide Notice: Aim to give at least a month's notice if possible, allowing time for a smooth transition. Look at your contract to verify this. 3. Offer Assistance: Ask your Captain/HOD what outstanding tasks they would like you to complete before departing. Also, find out if they would like help in training your replacement. 4. Stay Positive: Express gratitude for the experiences and skills you’ve gained, even if you’re leaving under less-than-ideal conditions. 5. Secure References: Before leaving, kindly ask the Captain or your HOD for a reference. 🔴 Don't: 1. Leave Abruptly: Unless your safety is at risk, avoid leaving without notice. This can damage your reputation in the industry. If you have another position starting before your notice period, discuss this with your current boat and possibly help them in finding your replacement. 2. Burn Bridges: Avoid negative comments about the boat or crew. The yachting community is small, and word travels fast. 3. Neglect Professionalism: Maintain a professional attitude throughout your departure process, ensuring a positive final impression. 4. Overlook Financial Matters: Ensure that all financial aspects, such as final payments, expenses, and reimbursements, are settled before you leave. ❓ Question about Commitment - When did people stop caring about it? And where is the balance between doing what is good for yourself and what you signed up for? Just so we are clear. Webster's Dictionary defines Commitment - "Having made a pledge to someone or something." I recently placed a stewardess in a role onboard a yacht. Great pay! Great Owners! and Great Crew! These were all things she specifically mentioned to me after she quit 3 days in. Her reason for quitting was "it was not the right fit". She has now decided to take only temporary roles. So in mentioning all of this - I'd like to point out a few things. 1. Before joining a yacht - figure out what you're looking for! (Duties, contract length, salary, itinerary, etc.) 2. Speak in length with the yacht to make sure it's a good fit. Ask anything and everything. 3. Realize that when you commit to a role, you are also committing to be a part of the team around you and the owners of the yacht. 4. Obviously, never stay on a yacht or in a role where you feel unsafe or unwelcome. Your safety and mental health should be a priority. 5. Commitment should be a part of all aspects of your life: fitness and health, personal development, and your relationships (significant others, family, and friends.) As agencies, we have all seen an increase in CVs from entry-level crew with little work or life experience. How hard is it for #yacht #crew to transition from 𝗦𝗘𝗔 to 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗? This is a subject that I have literally spent 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗦 discussing with crew, at all levels. Often, crew will acquire a wealth of knowledge during their time at sea.. ..and then be left wondering where that knowledge can be best utilised, once they decide to make the transition. Although we have definitely seen an increase in land-based employers seeking ex-crew to fill a variety of land-based yachting positions.. ..it can often seem like there are not many options available.
