Recruitment Consultant for Hill Robinson Yacht Management.

What advice would you give yourself if you were starting out again? Looking back on my journey, there are a few key pieces of advice I wish I had known when I was starting out in this industry. Not to Take Things Personally: Yachting is a close-quarters environment where tensions can run high. It's easy to take things said in the heat of the moment to heart. Learning not to hold onto these moments took me a long time, but I've realized that holding onto them only affects me. Now, I understand that issues often disappear as quickly as they arise, and how you react to them is your choice.  Appreciating My Surroundings: Looking back on my career, I realize how many incredible places I've been. I regret not taking full advantage of exploring different cultures and environments when I had the chance. While you may not always get ashore during trips, it's important to seize the opportunity to explore when you can, as you may never return to those places. Investing in my future: It is no secret that yacht crew are paid well and tend to have disposable income with zero over heads when living on board. During my leave I would be free flowing cash and buying material items such as watches and going on expensive holidays. Looking back now I wish I had consulted a financial advisor earlier on and dedicated a percentage of my income in investing in my future and preparing for when I came ashore. Not being as gullible:   Radar Calibration test (If you know, you know) but we all know it’s a right of passage. As a Recruitment Consultant for Hill Robinson it gives us the platform to pass this kind of advice on to the next generation of crew entering the industry helping to guide them onto the right path. Supporting them early on helps set off on their journeys the right way (or so we hope) so they can make the most out of their careers. If you find your vessel needing assistance in finding that right fit onboard or you are looking for some advice your self please free to reach out for a confidential chat.
