Charles Leclerc's "Monaco curse" I know IPL was taking the mind share this Sunday but there was history brewing in Formula 1 too… I always thought “Curses” were a Indian phenomenon but it’s good too see human side of formula 1. This is Leclerc’s HOME performance and what’s been eluding him 1. 2017 (F2): Leading the race, he retired due to suspension failure. 2. 2018 (F1 with Sauber): Crashed with Brendon Hartley. 3. 2019 (Ferrari): Strategic error led to a 16th place start, followed by retirement. 4. 2021 (Ferrari): Took pole but couldn't start due to car failure from a qualifying crash. 5. 2022 (Ferrari): Took pole but finished fourth due to strategic errors and a poorly timed pit stop. This year, yesterday, Leclerc finally broke the curse .. and how. My last post about F1 was well received, so let's risk looking like a #LinkedInLunatic to make a point. McLaren's Oscar Piastri is in the lead and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc is applying pressure by staying in DRS range. Piastri makes a mistake, sending his McLaren into a slide at the exit of the corner. Instead of capitalizing, Leclerc makes the exact same mistake. It costs him any chance of making the pass needed to win the race. Without the clean air, Leclerc's tires degrade faster, losing the grip needed to stay with Piastri. When you follow your opponent too closely, you're so focused on every move they make that you no longer run your own race. In the marketing world, you have to constantly keep tabs on what your competition is doing, but you also have to make decisions based on your own data and objectives. Too often, stakeholders will pressure you into making decisions because "that's what the competition is doing." Satisfying that way of thinking often comes at the detriment to you and your team's work. Leaders need to make decisions based on their own team's body of work, apply the findings and learn from the outcomes to improve. Another big development in the domestic building space, with a stay application under section 57 of the Domestic Building Contracts Act 1995 being granted by Judge Kirton in the County Court in Mooney v Fanissa [2024] VCC 1032, published today (link to judgment below). This decision is significant post Judge Burchell's two well known decisions in Uber Builders and Impressa Constructions (which both found that VCAT was not capable of hearing domestic building disputes in 2021 because of the various backlogs and resourcing issues). The important take home message now is that the dial has shifted since 2021: VCAT's delays and resourcing issues (which are still significant) are not as bad as they were, and can no longer be used as an excuse to commence plain vanilla domestic building proceedings in the County Court (that's my spin on things). Here is hoping this decision will see the reduction of smaller quantum and uncomplex domestic building disputes in the County Court (defect or termination claims of ordinary single occupancy dwellings), leaving the Court to deal with the bigger disputes that require more robust case management (apartment towers, multiple parties, complicated evidence).
