Today I read some news about construction companies in Finland are getting bankruptcy or in other words shutting down their business operations. This has captured my attention because I have great association with construction industries of various sectors, including refinery and oil and gas sector construction. Unlike small business setups construction decipline organisations are mainly depending on projects. New infrastructure development, extension on existing structure or upgrading the setup on new equipment/ technology, all this deal by such companies. Collapse of such companies, also show more than an year struggle to sustain and finally choosing another perspects of business or completely shutdown or relocating to another region. In my understanding, this definitely engaged the construction human resource to diversify their skills or learn new skills to choose other industrial opportunities, for their survival. This also brought many ideas in my mind but I am still looking forward to gain any opportunity related to developing/ maintaining management systems based on ISO 45001 & 14001 Standards. I came to know some companies recently certified for above two ISO Standards and started exploring to contact more companies which are certified for ISO standards of Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Management System. Do share if your organisation or any other organisation you know with similar certifications ? I believe organisations with vision of having strong management systems or those intended to continue international services, usually maintain such certifications. Hence, other reasons can be but knowing such companies would be greatful 😊

👀 For our Scottish friends in Engineering 👀 Over the past 12 months, engineering salaries in Scotland have seen a significant increase, driven by high demand for skilled professionals in the field. On average, engineering salaries have risen by approximately 17-18%, with some specialized roles experiencing even higher increases. This growth is largely fueled by major infrastructure projects and investments in renewable energy, making engineering talent highly sought after. The rising demand and skill shortages are pushing employers to offer more competitive salaries to attract and retain top talent in the region (Source: ScotlandIS).

🚨Industry News We were pleased to hear that this week Townsville Enterprise Limited [TEL] had a meeting with Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs, Mick de Brenni, regarding the latest CopperString announcement. This is intended to allow for more job opportunities for Townsville-based apprentices with the development of a SuperGrid Training Centre and Transmission Hub. The CopperString 2032 initiative entails the construction of a 1,100 km high-voltage electricity transmission line, linking Townsville to Mount Isa. This strategic project aims to integrate Queensland’s North West Minerals Province (NWMP) into the national electricity grid. On Tuesday, the Minister expressed his optimism about CopperString's substantial progress. "CopperString is unlocking the power of North Queensland, creating the jobs of the future while safeguarding and supporting existing workers and industries," he said. The Minister also shared that an additional 450 businesses have expressed keen interest in participating in this state-defining project, reflecting the widespread excitement and support for CopperString's impact. One of the most significant challenges I see in the construction industry is the power imbalance seen at the subcontractor level. Contracts often set the team/project up for conflict due to the fixed price contract model where Contractors are instructed to include the most expensive options when there is a lack of clarity or conflicting information. But there is no incentive to account for those discrepancies given the game is to have the lowest number. The lump sum contract model is only as good as the information it's based on and large projects typically end up getting bogged down dealing with strained relationships due to the agitation caused by this traditional contract model paired with design defects. More specifically, I find that M&E contractors are often left holding the proverbial bag in these debates because their scopes can be highly technical and most folks aren't able to grasp onto nuances and thus their support for the contractors position fades. In these cases, the subcontractor is forced to complete the work with no assurances or any likelihood of being compensated fairly for the work. This culture leads to the industry sending in low numbers and slogging through highly contentious change orders. I certainly don't find this to be a desirable culture, but it really starts with the contract model and truly cultivating a partnership model for everyone that includes Consultants, General Contractors, Clients, and Subcontractors. Progress has been made on this as there are numerous contact models available to choose from now, so that is positive. And I hope all groups in the industry learn more about which model is best suited for a given project.
