At Pen y Cymoedd, the largest onshore wind farm in England and Wales, the wind farm funds a 25-year £3 million habitat restoration scheme, including 150ha (roughly equivalent to 150 rugby pitches) of active peatland restoration. Unfortunately, a number of current wind farm projects in the planning pipeline are facing difficulties with the planning system, due to a lack of clear and consistent guidance around peatland restoration. To achieve our clean energy goals we will need a portfolio of solar deployment types; solar on marginal lands, distributed solar in urban areas, solar utilizing co-benefits approaches such as ecovoltaics and agrivoltaics. No one approach is sufficient to meet decarbonization goals. The Great Plains Institute is working with TNC and others in Illinois to foster all of these approaches. We're launching a workshop series on the marginal lands question on February 16th, emphasizing an Illinois-specific opportunity - solar development on abandoned mine lands (register at https://lnkd.in/gMVEY4h2). TNC's analysis in Illinois shows that abandoned minelands and brownfields offer the potential to install over 15 GW of solar. While this doesn't meet the complete need for decarbonizing Illinois grid, it makes a substantial contribution to the need, maximizes local benefits, and turns land use conflicts into assets. Removing barriers (and taking advantage of incentives) on these areas first will minimize potential conflicts with natural and agricultural lands. GPI is also working with communities to create local value with their solar resources through ecovoltaic and agrivoltaic designs and siting, and removing barriers to rooftop and parking lot solar. Over 50% of the land in a typical solar farm is open space that can frequently be used for co-located assets that benefit the community. Rooftop "solar energy reserves" in cities have potential to generate as much as 40% of current electric use. This is the solar portfolio we need to build in the next 20 years...
