Highlighting Scotland's strengths and ambitions in space, Richard Lochhead, The Scottish Government's Minister for Business, reflects on the nation's remarkable progress following his attendance at Scotland's largest-ever gathering of the space industry👇 ⭐ Recent figures reveal a 25% growth in the number of companies in Scotland’s space sector within just one year, accompanied by a remarkable 65% surge in their combined income over the same period. ⭐ In just a few years, Scotland’s space sector has transformed from a single individual in an office to a multi-million-pound industry, now employing over 6,000 people across more than 200 companies and organisations. ⭐ Glasgow, once renowned for its shipbuilding heritage, is now the biggest small satellite manufacturing hub in the world outside of California. After seeing numerous new partnerships formed between companies, organisations, and countries at last week's event, Mr Lochhead emphasises, "the advancement of our space sector is not just an economic opportunity, it’s also creating an enormous force for good across society, helping the global community solve some of the biggest and most pressing challenges we face in the 21st century. Scottish space companies like Orbex are leading the charge with innovations in cleaner fuels and intelligent manufacturing, proving that reaching orbit with a significantly reduced carbon footprint is achievable 👣 Orbex's Prime rocket is a 19-meter, two-stage system designed to carry small satellites into low Earth orbit. The rocket is made from carbon fibre, which is lighter and stronger than aluminum, reducing the fuel needed for launches. The company is set to accelerate the development and launch of this rocket, pushing the boundaries of sustainable spaceflight. Aberdeen-based HonuWorx aims "to change the game for underwater robotics" when it comes to inspection, maintenance and repair, after securing a seven-figure investment 👏 The firm is developing an all-electric 'mothership' submarine that will transport and deploy remotely operated vehicles for subsea inspection and maintenance. The company sees opportunity arising as a result of the huge growth in offshore wind and resulting increase in underwater assets. It's Chief Executive, Lee Wilson, says its technology will help "deliver cleaner, safer and more cost-effective operations for global underwater industries, including energy and security".
