Symposium vs. Conference - are you curious about the difference? . While the distinction between the two is not always clear, I think I like the way this article breaks it down. But of course, as mentioned in the article, the usage is largely industry-based. In short... . Conferences tend to be larger and cover an array of topics, discussions and experiences. While Symposiums tend to be smaller and more focused, with one (or a more narrow) subject-matter focus. . At times these terms are used interchangeably. But no matter how you use it, understanding this breakdown may help you determine what type of event you want to do, and what's needed to put it together. 😊 #eventmanagement #eventsindustry #eventprofs #symposium #conference

I love solving difficult problems. Currently solving: Simultaneous Interpretation between English and Russian | Data Analytics
Have you ever thought to yourself, ‘Ah, obviously they were going to talk about this’? The main ways to think ‘Ha, I knew they were going to talk about this’ instead are: - Looking up previous/last year's events - Speakers’ previous presentations - Overarching themes - Agenda - News 1️⃣ Just as the weather forecast is 80% about comparing the next day with the previous day, in most cases, one or a few previous events is all it takes to prepare for the next one. 2️⃣ Most speakers have a few presentations memorized with the same metaphors, examples, and key takeaways. Usually, it’s more than enough to find the longest presentation or the one with the most views and analyze it. 3️⃣ The agenda is like a treasure map. You can find the Grail without it, but it’s much easier after you’ve visited all the obelisks. 4️⃣ News defines the context, especially if there are shifts in politics, tech, or the economy. There are plain events and conferences where the only notations used are ‘Main Lobby’, ‘Hall 9000’, or ‘Room 101’ – pretty uneventful and easy to confuse unless it’s the main stage. 5️⃣ Some events want to be different so they use distinctive schemes to differentiate various sections. During a medical conference, the organizers decided to use the names of famous physicians for an immersive navigation. There is a high probability that those names (famous people or well-known sights/objects) will be referenced in the opening speech by the organizers. There is also a good chance those could be mentioned during a panel discussion, especially if the names are visible on the stage prompting speakers to include those in their dialogue. You almost never hear any references during hardcore nitty-gritty technical sessions. 🥧 Naturally, you can already think of a few scenarios where somebody would joke “Да тут целый зал Абрикосов” or “Нам нужен зал Пирогов”. 🌓 And of course, hypothetically, if there is an upcoming conference that uses celestial bodies as the names of those sections, it’s worth the time to read the basic information about those planets or satellites and double-check their English pronunciation because someone will definitely incorporate them in their speech. #1nt

CAIS is excited to announce the publication of a Special Issue article on the future of AIS conferences, "Generating Stakeholder Value Through Increasingly Hybridized Conferences: Insights from 30 Years of ACIS Conferences", by Mary Tate, Victoria University of Wellington, Sander Paul Zwanenburg, University of Otago, and Rodney J. Clarke, University of Wollongong. The abstract: "In the last few years, changes to the Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS) have accelerated in response to COVID-19, as well as climate change, technological advances, and trends in the tertiary sector. These underlying conditions have generated much discussion within annual conference committees and their partners. These discussions were ongoing before the pandemic but have increased in importance as a result of the pandemic and a trend towards hybridization and virtualization of some or all conference events. In this paper, we distill these ongoing discussions and apply them specifically to the issues identified in a recent AIS task force report on conference virtualization. We identify the stakeholders in the conference ecosystem and the risks they would incur from poor quality conference experiences. Through this analysis we provide 57 recommendations to mitigate the risks of a poor conference experience and to improve value-creation opportunities. We hope our recommendations and reflections can advance the debate and help conferences continuously adapt to their changing environment to realize their potential to generate value for their IS communities." Keywords include: Conference, Stakeholder, Value, Risk, Recommendations. Cite as: Tate, M., Zwanenburg, S., & Clarke, R. J. (2024).
