Glitch is proud to be unapologetic in our desire to do charity differently. It's helpful to have the support, funding and encouragement from organisations like Comic Relief, whose Power Up programme enabled Glitch to review, reflect on and action feminist governance and management practices to better support our values-led mission to end online abuse. As explained in the report, "feminist governance means identifying all of the spaces that shape an organisation’s strategic direction and accountability and then interrogating where power lies and how it is exercised." "Organisations need to continually articulate and return to the values they’re aiming for. One Power Up group, Glitch, chooses one value a month which staff review in meetings: what it means and how the team or individuals have exemplified that." We highly recommend reading the report in full, as it helpfully outlines key learnings that would apply to diverse organisations seeking to impact communities with varied needs. #CSW68 is off to a great start with an invigorating discussion on resourcing feminist futures and a fiery line up of youth organizers and feminist funders. The stories shared by youth organizers on funding practices that reinforce oppressive power structures and hinder our ability to get work done is one we’re very familiar with. It was also really important to see funders share the ways they are bypassing these structures to make sure funds get into the hands of girls and youth-led organizations. The risks in the environments we work with, especially in the Global South, demands care and transformative funding practices. From the point of designing funds to the disbursing stage, funders should aim for radical feminist practices that may go against the funding frameworks they are used to but ensures the work gets done. While the need to organize has remained pressing for feminist visions of grassroots-led change, when it comes to funding and access to resources, grassroots organizing in India is sitting on the ends of a double-edged sword. On one end, access to resources has been severely limited due to the stringent rules and policies governing funding in India, such as the FCRA. On the other end is the politics of who gets access to the shrinking pot of global feminist funding where small organisations and collectives remain the worst affected. In this ecosystem, how do global funders ask grassroots feminists to sustainably engage, especially young women leaders and gender-diverse youth and who is going to share the burden of their risk? It was enlightening to contribute to discussions and share inputs for this powerful article co-written by Jeevika S. and Maitree Muzumdar. Their article highlights challenges facing grassroots feminist organizing in India, where regulatory barriers like the FCRA hinder access to resources while global funders often overlook the most marginalized voices. While there are new initiatives emerging to bridge this gap, sustaining engagement remains tough, especially for young feminists from marginalized backgrounds. Women’s funds and foundations play a critical role in supporting women's well-being and gender justice movements. This 2022 landscape study by the Women's Funding Network, a global alliance of women’s foundations and gender justice funders, provides valuable insights into the makeup, needs and impact of women's funds. The report also provides recommendations for how other funders and sector partners can collaborate with women's funds/foundations to advance social issues: 1. Resource women’s funds as primary and essential collaborators when developing strategies to tackle economy, climate, education, and crisis response issues. Women's funds bring a gender-based perspective that includes grappling with equity and power across marginalized identities. 2. Uplift women’s funds to build a diverse leadership pipeline within philanthropy. Women’s funds are the fastest growing network of women of color leaders within philanthropy. Despite their growing presence, women's rights and feminist organizations receive a disproportionately small share of funding across financial sources such as governmental development assistance, foundation grants, and private donor contributions. This is especially true for direct funding to support women's political leadership, which remains a fraction of already limited resources. Funded by the Open Society Foundations, research by the Panorama Strategy team uncovers the critical need for resources in this area, particularly in the Global South.
