PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: 3.3 MILLION BOARD FEET OF LOCALLY SOURCED MASS TIMBER This project will undoubtedly be a game-changer for the Portland region. For a long time, I've looked up to this city for its relentless innovation, artistry, and DIY prowess. In recent years, it feels like Portland has struggled to keep its accolades in sustainable development alive in the global eye. The story around the Portland Airport has garnered attention from nearly every architecture publication and elected officials at every level. President Biden himself visited the project and has continuously touted #masstimber for its low-carbon benefits and its potential to generate regional/national economic development. The timber for the 9-acre structure was procured from a diverse array of local landowners and Pacific Northwest tribes across the region within a 600-mile radius. Hyla Woods, Skokomish Tribe, Anne and Richard Hanshcu, and the Nature Conservancy provided the beautiful Douglas Fir material for the terminal redevelopment. I see this project as a catalyst for a better Portland. This gorgeous structure will serve as the global gateway to our city. It will tell a story to visitors about who we are and what we are able to accomplish together. I am proud to be working alongside a team dedicated to this project and many others across the country that are completely changing the way we build for the cities of tomorrow. Phase One of #PDXnext opens in May 2024. You can follow the Port of Portland for campaign updates at: pdxnext.com Visit Timberlab to learn more about the mass timber innovation that went into PDX: timberlab.com/projects/pdx #masstimber #masstimberconstruction #timberengineering #timberconstruction #sustainabledevelopment #sustainabledesign #lowcarbon #lowcarboneconomy #greeneconomy #greenbuilding #architecture #pdx #portland #airportdesign #airport

Eastern Suburbs: Skyward Bound, Community Grounded An ambitious rezoning proposal on New South Head Road aimed at redefining the amalgamted site's architectural and social landscape is in the final stages of planning, with gateway determination issued mid-2023. The site's new planning framework will facilitate a transformative mixed-use development that is visionary in scope and grounded in community benefits. In particular, the site's building height and FSR have improved to 46 metres (from 14.5 metres) and 5:1 (from 1.5:1). The existing streetscape of New South Head Road features inconsistent typologies, fragmented built scales and low pedestrian amenities. Development of the sites will provide a much-needed opportunity to enhance the consistency of built form along the northern side of New South Head Road, as well as benefit the streetscape. Let's inject some light-hearted amusement into the story revolving around the Foreshore Freeway Bridge, famously known as the Cape Town Unfinished Bridge. This architectural oddity has a deep-rooted history dating back to the Apartheid era, when construction abruptly stopped, leaving the bridge in an unfinished state. Despite the somber origins, there is certainly space to discover humor and irony in the situation. The Foreshore Freeway Bridge stands as a whimsical reminder of a past era, frozen in time with its concrete columns reaching towards the heavens, almost resembling a contemporary ruin. Visitors and residents alike often admire the sight, sparking discussions about the eccentricities of urban design and infrastructure progress. It's hard not to smile at the contrast of such a grand structure left incomplete amidst the lively cityscape of Cape Town. It acts as a visual symbol for the unpredictability of advancement and the meandering path that history can take, much like an unfinished puzzle waiting to be completed. Despite its incomplete nature, the Foreshore Freeway Bridge has gained a sense of fondness from the populace, evolving into a symbol of resilience and flexibility. It has even sparked creative interpretations, with street artists and photographers capturing its eerie beauty from unique perspectives. In a world where flawlessness is often expected, the Cape Town Unfinished Bridge urges us to embrace imperfection and uncover beauty in the unfinished. It serves as a reminder that life is an ongoing journey, and sometimes the most captivating tales lie within the incomplete chapters. So, let's keep cherishing the peculiar allure of the Foreshore Freeway Bridge and allow its legacy of humor and tenacity to endure. #LizweEngineers #LizweOnlineCourses #LizweTechnicalTraining #FunFriday #civilengineering #mechanicalengineering #engineering #engineers

The living roof at 145 Biltmore was recently honored with a 2024 NCASLA Recognition Award in the General Design category. 🎉 This multi-unit residential urban infill project is located within the impacted French Broad River watershed, and the vegetated roof serves as a stormwater control measure, setting a new standard of resilience by reimagining a rooftop as infrastructure with the dynamic beauty of a wildflower meadow. For this project, Living Roofs, Inc. designed a custom green roof system to maximize stormwater benefits and ease the building’s impact on existing public infrastructure. As a result, the site now issues less stormwater runoff than before development, helping alleviate local flooding and waterway impairment. In addition to acting as a stormwater control, the roof addresses regional climate challenges including biodiversity loss and urban heat island effect. Its diversity of native plant species improves air quality and creates a pollinator sanctuary and migratory refuge. The site is crowned by a cool and vibrant space in an area of the city identified as having the highest heat vulnerability (NASA.gov). Architecture by MHAworks; Vegetated roof: Living Roofs, Inc.
