CIL’s Emergency Preparedness and Resiliency Program wants our communities to stay safe and resourced as California enters an extreme heatwave this week. In Alameda County, there is a heat advisory in effect beginning Monday, September 30th through Wednesday, October 2nd, when temperatures will range from the low-80s at the coast, to the low hundreds inland, due to off-shore winds. This could be extended through Thursday. Please keep checking *trusted* news/weather sources. There is also a Spare the Air day associated with this event. Extreme heat events can cause power outages, impact cooling systems, and lead to negative health outcomes, illness, and even death. Since the fatal effects of Winter Storm Uri struck Texas three years ago, two other major, named storms, hit the region and neither caused the power grid to fail the way it did in 2021. Considering everything that is going around especially today with the release of the storm overflow data I thought I'd give a little bit of a background to what monitoring has and will be going in and where. These, generally, are the regulatory monitors that have been installed under the various Water Industry National Environment Programme as decided on by the Environment Agency. What it shows is a large amount of monitoring has been going in and will be going on and as we get the results each year there will be cries of the water industry not performing and yes storm overflows have to be reduced and they will be via the plans that are going on but things take time to do and the national strategy including SUDS to slow the flow and improvements in the infrastructure are also needed as well. What this shows on an individual company level is that some companies are doing better than others and actually for some companies 2023 isn't the worst year on record and things are being done and things are improving.
