Automotive News editorial: Viewing electric vehicle progress through a national lens doesn't show the full picture. States are in charge. State-by-state nuances are important to consider when we see the tally of only eight EV charging stations online through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program (charger data via EVAdoption). One senator called it "pathetic" progress this week. Slow progress doesn't equate to failure. Each of the 50 states dictates its own rules that support (or complicate) EV adoption. The discrepancies break the narrative into 50 stories of headway, roadblocks, detours and delays. Thank you Hannah Lutz! It's been a challenge when talking about our family's personal decision to go completely electric. Federal dollars are also there but the state by state rules and regulations are making overall infrastructure development disparate and, in some places, slow. Even in Michigan, the state leading the charge in mobility, we aren't as far along with the number of chargers that we need. In the majority of my conversations, folks are quick to say, I will never get an electric vehicle or There aren't enough chargers. Fair. But how many people are taking the actual time to dig into the challenges and understand the whys and why nots? It's this lack of patience and overall lack of education that is slowing the market when it comes to electric vehicle purchases. Advocates like me are doing what we can, but the automotive companies need to speed up the transparency behind what is going on with funding and state government support. #evs #electriccars #ev #carnews #cars #mobility

On today's episode of Quick Charge, Nate McDonald from Ford Pro discusses E-Switch Assist, a new fleet management tool designed to help commercial customers determine the right time to transition to electric vehicles (EVs). This complimentary software analyzes telematic data from existing gas and diesel-powered Ford F-150 and Transit models, assessing their energy use to identify candidates for electrification. Pilot programs evaluated over 38,000 vehicles, revealing that nearly 53% are "Highly Likely Eligible" or "Likely/Potentially Eligible" for an EV switch. EV adoption hitting new records in a state not known for aggressive incentives, North Carolina. Highlights that as public charging infrastructure expands and improves and as more models that meet and exceed customer expectations, adoption will likely follow. Another great example!

My daughter recently pointed out to me that our neighbor purchased a new Honda Prologue EV. Our conversation then turned into a discussion regarding fuel efficiency in EVs - are some EVs more efficient than others, and if so which ones? Apex Analytics and Rolling Energy Resources (now part of ev.energy) partnered together earlier this year to answer this exact question for the Northwest Regional Technical Forum (RTF). The study looked at both EPA efficiency ratings as well as real-world driving and charging from thousands of vehicles on the RER platform. The study concluded that real world efficiency can differ substantially from EPA ratings (see the chart below which segments by the selected EPA test methodology), plus efficiency varies widely, not just by manufacturer but also by model, trim, and even tire size. Weather makes a big difference as well, lowering efficiency by as much as 15% during the coldest and hottest months of the year. Great news from the great state of North Carolina. Most of the time, these ambitious goals are missed but we actually hit it two years early.
