#Policing #NewMexico #Racism Recent footage from an Albuquerque police officer's lapel camera, inadvertently recorded after a fatal shooting, has surfaced, exposing officers using racially derogatory language and showing a disturbing lack of respect towards the victim. The video captures the officers making insensitive jokes about Native Americans and discussing the incident with callous disregard. This has prompted an internal investigation by the Albuquerque Police Department, condemnation from city officials, and calls for comprehensive reforms from civil rights groups and local Indigenous organizations. Important to note is the fact that this incident was revealed on the tail wind of DOJ oversight of APD. Critical research on the embeddedness of racism in US policing should be consulted to better understand the cultural dynamics behind this incident. In The End of Policing, Alex Vitale addresses the intersection of racism and policing by highlighting how law enforcement practices disproportionately target marginalized communities, particularly Black and Indigenous people. He argues that systemic racism is deeply embedded in the policing system, manifesting in discriminatory practices such as racial profiling, excessive use of force, and disproportionate incarceration rates. Vitale emphasizes that these issues are not merely a matter of individual biases but are structural problems inherent in the way policing operates. A few bad apples? Or a deeper, systemic issue? The surveys carried out by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights show that the police treat ethnic minority groups differently. Racism in policing ranges from racist comments and more frequent stops to excessive use of force and sometimes even violence...Yet, most EU countries do not record or collect data on racists incidents involving the police. Black women face higher rates of arrest, charges and convictions than white women, highlighting deep-rooted systemic biases within the criminal justice system. As we focus on reforming women’s prisons, it’s essential to address the over-policing and criminalisation of Black women.
