It’s #MentalHealthWeek in Canada, a reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental wellbeing for ourselves and those around us. The facts are powerful. According to CAMH: 💭 In any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians will experience mental illness; 💭 By the time we reach 40, 1 in 2 of us will have / have had a mental illness; 💭 Young people (those aged 15-24) are the most likely to experience mental illness. These stats mean that mental illness will impact all of us either directly or through family, friends and colleagues. Encouragingly, while 75% of respondents in a recent survey said they would be reluctant to disclose a mental illness at work, the same survey revealed that 76% of respondents would be completely comfortable and supportive if a colleague disclosed a mental illness. I believe this is meaningful progress in recognizing and accepting the prevalence of mental illness in recent years. This year’s theme for Mental Health Week—compassion—reminds us of the power of empathy and understanding in supporting one another. I hope that anyone at IMCO managing mental health challenges, whether personally or through a loved one, feels supported by us. It’s #MentalHealthWeek and we’re gearing up for a week of connection, compassion and camaraderie here at IMCO and embracing this year’s theme of #CompassionConnects. It’s easy to forget the power of compassion, but this week we’re making it our mission to connect through kindness, empathy, and understanding. Whether it’s checking in and lending an ear or simply saying hello to another team member, we’re cultivating a culture where compassion thrives. In support of #MentalHealthWeek, we’ll be participating in a Mental Health Summit virtual event alongside our pension peers and hosting a Canine Therapy Day for our employees.
