Did you know that August is Black Business Month? While the work I am honored to lead at BeyGOOD Foundation is rooted in creating more opportunities for economic equity and growth, it’s important to shine a light this month on the staggering reality for many Black business owners across the United States. Despite there being over 160,000 Black-onwed business contributing over $180 billion dollars to our economy, annually, according to Crunchbase data (2022), only 2.4% of venture capital dollars went to Black-owned businesses. With a funding gap this wide, it shows us very clearly just how much work is still left to do to create a future that provides equitable access to society's most marginalized and underserved communities. These businesses are the backbones of these communities and when they receive the access, support and visibility they need to attain greater success, they, in turn, have the ability to create opportunities for transformative change across generations. This is why we are so proud to collaborate with the amazing businesses that are part of the Black Parade Route, and I hope you’ll join me in supporting the small Black-owned businesses in your community who are doing their part to their mark on the beautiful tapestry that is the American economy. My new start up Black Anvil is helping businesses create conversations with their customers where they can learn from each other and use that to grow revenue. One of the methods is to have a newsletter where we segment content into streams. Each stream has a specific goal a unique call to action that we can observe over time while making adjustments. Here's an example of the streams: Educational, to give customers more confidence in buying while learning new objections News, people like hearing what new stuff is happening and make inquiries Deals, everyone likes saving money Which one do you think is the most important and why? What streams do you think I'm missing?

Here's why we're spending time with each other instead of going to Black Hat this year: ↳ We've been to Black Hat in past years which was expensive, really expensive. ↳ Did we see an ROI? Sure. But, for 1/3 of the price we can attend smaller events that are better aligned with our ICP and have less hype. ↳ Our goal is to have real, meaningful conversations with potential customers and partners and we've found that our audience prefers cheaper-sponsor conferences. Lastly, not attending Black Hat allows us to do a lot of other things like go out to lunch and prioritize items that benefit everyone in the company.

On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday, marking a significant step in acknowledging the historical and cultural importance of this day. This decision came a year after the largest social protests in U.S. history, reflecting a nationwide call for justice and equality. Recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday underscores the importance of acknowledging and owning our public memory. It is a day to celebrate freedom and a moment to reflect on how the United States continues to evolve towards its ideals of democracy, freedom, and justice. Although the U.S. is a work in progress, it is through the relentless efforts of countless individuals that the nation strives to fulfill its promise: to be a place where all people can realize their unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To achieve this, we must ensure that the American narrative includes the collective journey of African Americans, particularly those descended from enslaved ancestors. One person dedicated to preserving the public record of Black lives in America, from Barack Obama to Colin Powell, is Julieanna Richardson. As the founder of The HistoryMakers, she oversees the largest collection of African American testimonies since the Works Progress Administration. I had the honor of interviewing her during the 64th annual Fulbright Association Conference, where she delivered a moving and poignant case for the necessity of documenting the Black narrative in America.
