June marks Pride Month, a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities worldwide. The fact that we celebrate in June is not insignificant - it coincides with the date of the 1969 Stonewall riots, widely credited as the catalyst of the Queer Liberation movement. Many countries have made great strides towards LGBTQ+ equality - but this has not been a globally consistent, or linear, path. Many Queer people are still subject to immense discrimination and injustice, and many Governments have or are seeking to introduce legislation which will roll back some of the progress that has been made towards equality - including in some of OC&C’s geographies. It is for this reason that we commemorate Pride - to celebrate the progress we have made as a society, but also to raise awareness of the inequality and discrimination LGBTQ+ people face daily. At OC&C, we look forward to hearing from our colleagues and clients about their journeys as LGBTQ+ people, and fundraising for our charity partner Just Like Us as well as other charities. Being an LGBTQ+ ally is about helping to create an inclusive environment where everyone can be themselves. The most recent data from the Stonewall ‘LGBT in Britain Work Report’, found that 35% of LGBTQ+ staff have hidden that they are LGBTQ+ at work, for fear of discrimination. Concerns about being treated differently keep many from being out at work, but allyship increases comfort in being out. Some good news as we head into the final weekend of Pride month: Funders for LGBTQ Issues has reported that Tides Foundation is the fifth-largest funder of LGBTQ issues in the United States! We're also the 4th-largest funder of LGBTQ issues by number of grants. Other takeaways from Funders for LGBTQ Issues' report: ➡️ Funding for trans communities from foundations increased by 34%, a result of strategic philanthropic organizing efforts that ramped up in response to a surge in legal and policy attacks on trans lives. ➡️ For the first time, a majority of grants from U.S. foundations were general operating support grants—vital for ensuring that LGBTQ organizations can function sustainably in the long term. ➡️ Funding to Black LGBTQ communities doubled from 7% to 14%, although total overall funding for LGBTQ communities of color decreased.
