Rivers in London will need to be resilient in order to counter the effects of the climate emergency. London – like – the rest of the world is susceptible to accelerated and intense periods of drought and flooding due to the climate crisis. So, we need resilient rivers. In fact, we need London to become a ‘sponge city’. What does this mean in practice? Well, London will need more nature-based solutions such as wetlands and a potential estimated 357,000 new rain gardens of around 20 m sq each. These nature-based solutions soak up excess rainwater. Existing targets are set too far in the future. Action is needed now! As standard, any roadworks should require a needs assessment for rain gardens, and where needed – delivery! As part of London Rivers Week 2024, CPRE London will be hosting an event on the issue. By 2030, Paris hopes to have 50% of its ground area covered by water permeable surfaces, including green roofs, avenues, mini-gardens and new parks, one of which should be open within 12 months.
