At this year's State of the Estuary Conference, our Native Nursery Manager Millie presented "Cultivating Community Through Affinity Based Volunteer Programming", discussing their development of affinity volunteer programs at Save The Bay. Millie launched the initiative in January 2023 and has since been directing programs for members of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color), LGBTQ+ and QTPOC (Queer/Trans People of Color) communities. Affinity based volunteer programs offer a way to address a lack of diversity in the community science space and provide an opportunity for folks with shared identities to participate in community based land stewardship. Millie highlighted their work partnering with Latino Outdoors and Justice Outside, organizations that are already deeply involved in equity based work in the environmental sector. They shared the tangible impact of affinity based volunteerism in fostering community within green spaces. One affinity volunteer member said: "Millie is one of the most amazing people I've met! They made caring for plantitas and habitat restoration such a wonderful time in every stage I've been fortunate enough to experience. They're also directly responsible for my forming of life-long friendships with other awesome folks as a result of them starting the BIPOC affinity events." Thank you Millie for your amazing work! We are excited to continue to support and uplift this incredible program.🌿❤️
