January is the National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month and today marks the launch of the Merseyside Modern Slavery Delivery Plan. Savera UK joined other organisations with Merseyside PCC to develop a network of strategic actions to help put an end to Modern Slavery. As a memeber of the Modern Slavery Network, Savera UK discussed our expertise in relation to our services. 'Honour'-based abuse often has a high level of domestic servitude and can evolve into modern slavery if not intercepted by professionals. Together we are passionate about reducing the prevalence of Modern Slavery and the harm it causes. Read the Delivery Plan here: https://bit.ly/4aVDeSC

Today is Anti-Slavery Day in the UK, created to raise awareness of all forms of exploitation associated with modern slavery and human trafficking. When at our recent workshop with an insightful group of people with lived experience of exploitation we discussed what modern slavery is, the lack of choice emerged as a major theme: ☝ Modern slavery as the removal of choice and control over people's lives. ☝ The lack of good choices to provide for themselves and their families was the factor that puts people at risk of being exploited. The conclusion that emerged was that to prevent modern slavery and exploitation, we need to give people good choices for finding decent jobs and living safe lives. We will continue to work towards a world where people can live safe lives and be protected from modern slavery by effective, evidence-based policies. Some of these policies we outlined in the policy report we published earlier this week, which recommends that the new UK Government should incorporate modern slavery prevention into its missions and priorities in order to effectively address modern slavery. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eW8SG-nB

Have you read the Modern Slavery Act of 2015? It stipulates that; A person commits an offence if- • the person holds another person in slavery or servitude and the circumstances are such that the person knows or ought to know that the other person is held in slavery or servitude, or • the person requires another person to perform forced or compulsory labour and the circumstances are such that the person knows or ought to know that the other person is being required to perform forced or compulsory labour. ✓ Securing of services through threats or deception, and the securing of services from children or vulnerable persons also constitutes modern Slavery. Yes , modern forms of slavery or forced labor or neo bondage are on rise , we need to more research and trend analysis to understand the dynamics of modern forms of slavery. With greater influence of AI in our work programs the slavery or labor exploitation is on rise. Both in the organised and unorganised or informal sectors. Ironically, we are silent on such issues or ignorant. Hence, research can highlight voids in our policy and practice. Once these gaps are identified ( which are changing rapidly with advent of technology) then they can be plugged by policy interventions and deterrence.
“We recognise that behind every number there is a person who has been exploited and experienced significant harm” Director of Policy Impact at the Modern Slavery PEC Olivia Hesketh on the balance between quantitative and qualitative research to investigate modern slavery, as part of the evidence session on data and stats for the House of Lords Committee examining the impact of the 2015 Modern Slavery Act.

What does it truly mean to keep survivors safe? In this insightful piece, Our Executive Director explores how community-based solutions offer a powerful alternative to traditional frameworks of safety. Instead of focusing solely on punishment, we need upstream investments like housing, mental health care, economic opportunity, and social supports to foster safety and healing. This article challenges us to reimagine survivor safety—moving beyond reactive systems to build communities where harm is less likely to happen in the first place.
