🌳🌍 Today, on the International Day of Forests, let's shine a light on Sauti Kuu's Afforestation & Reforestation project sponsored by the Austrian Embassy in Nairobi. Siaya County, an area of about 2,496 km² with a population of close to 993,183, only has approx. 2% forest cover. The lack of forest cover is as a result of the felling of trees for firewood (charcoal) for domestic use. This lack of tree cover not only impacts local farm yields but also jeopardizes food security. Based on land availability Siaya County should be able to provide for itself and, beyond that, supply other parts of the country with food produce. In response to this pressing issue, Sauti Kuu has taken action in Alego Nyangoma, Siaya County. Through afforestation and reforestation initiatives, we aim to continue to: 🌧️ Influence rainfall patterns to enhance crop yields. 🌿 Restore the traditional live hedges around homesteads, enriching the local forest cover. 🔥 Provide sustainable alternatives to firewood by utilizing dry twigs and branches from live hedges for cooking. 🛡️ Establish live hedges as security fencing while also offering fruits for consumption and income generation. Together, let's celebrate the power of trees and commit to nurturing and preserving our precious forests for generations to come. 🌲🌳 #IntlForestDay #SautiKuu #Afforestation #Reforestation #Sustainability 🌍

Today, over 2 billion people rely on solid fuel such as charcoal for domestic cooking. Charcoal production can be extremely detrimental to the environment, as it can require upwards of 10 tons of wood to produce 1 ton of traditional charcoal. One of the initiatives at the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project is to create sustainable charcoal by pruning shrubs, rather than cutting down entire trees. Our team has produced tens of thousands of kgs of eco-charcoal without cutting down a single tree and are developing sales channels to increase its distribution. Nine permanent staff manually process up to 500 kgs of briquettes/week. This environmentally-friendly charcoal reduces deforestation pressures while providing an affordable cooking fuel for Kenyan families. Watch Kenya Television Network (KTN)’s full report on the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project to listen directly to what local community members think of the project, as reported by the Kenyan media. They covered various project activities including the production of eco-charcoal. Click here to watch the full clip: https://lnkd.in/e8JfT9i5 #charcoal #conservation #Kenya

The recently concluded Africa #Fertilizer and Soil Summit in Nairobi, themed "Listen to the Land," is particularly significant for grassroots-level farmers in Kenya, who are the most directly impacted by #soil degradation and climate change. This summit highlights the critical role these farmers play in both the degradation and rehabilitation of soil quality. By focusing on sustainable practices and advanced soil management techniques tailored to local conditions, the summit provides essential knowledge and resources to these farmers. It empowers them to make informed decisions that align with Sustainable Development #Goal15, #LifeonLand, which not only aims to halt land degradation but also strives for a resurgence in land productivity. Therefore, bringing such valuable insights and practices directly to the grassroots farmers is crucial for fostering environmental stewardship and ensuring the sustainability of their farming practices, which is vital for their livelihoods and the broader ecological health of the region. #Livelihoods #SoilHealth Sheila Komen Keino African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) GEO LDN

Nairobi-based journalist, Robert Kibet, visited the farms we’re working with. It's part of a project in Kenya, which aims to transform #RuralEconomies through regenerative agriculture. He writes: “Rural Kenyans are forging a path toward a more #Sustainable future and protecting their lives and livelihoods from climate change through regenerative agriculture, nurturing hope for their communities and the environment." “According to a 2022 report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature titled ‘#RegenerativeAgriculture: An opportunity for businesses and society to restore degraded land in Africa’, the adoption of regenerative agriculture has the potential to generate approximately five million jobs by 2040 in Africa. Additionally, it aims to boost revenue and ensure food security for smallholder farmers.” Robert met Yvonne Atieno (pictured), a certified accountant who now runs a thriving smallholding and collaborates with Practical Action. Yvonne said: "In this pursuit, unlike traditional employment, I harbour no anxieties about retirement. It is profoundly rewarding, especially when I rise early each morning to witness the flourishing of my African vegetables.” https://lnkd.in/dmGNk_yJ 🔗 The report: https://lnkd.in/enGXGpew.

Day 2: 🌱🌱Take a picture in your community and tell us what changes would contribute to the future of sustainability. 🌱🌱 🌱The picture from Osona Village, Okahandja, Namibia 🇳🇦 , showcases a dry and sparsely vegetated landscape. 🌱 To enhance sustainability in this community, the following changes could be implemented: Reforestation and Afforestation: Planting native trees and shrubs can help restore the natural ecosystem, increase biodiversity, and improve soil health. Water Management Systems: Implementing rainwater harvesting and efficient irrigation systems can help manage water resources, vital in arid regions. Renewable Energy Installations: Setting up solar panels and wind turbines can provide clean, sustainable energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Sustainable Agriculture Practices: Promoting crop rotation, organic farming, and the use of drought-resistant crops can improve food security and reduce environmental impact. Community Education and Involvement: Educating the community on sustainable practices and involving them in conservation projects can ensure long-term success and maintenance of these initiatives. These changes can significantly contribute to the future sustainability of Osona Village and its surroundings. #31daysofaisustainabilityadvocate #WBG #GETINGO

INGLOSUS has partnered with Cultiva Green Project in Ecuador to build solar greenhouses. Ecuador has the highest rate of child malnutrition in South America and in the Cunucyacu province alone, one-third of all children under 2 years face daily food insecurity. Since the construction of the first 400- meter greenhouse, we have seen the commitment of people to this community to be self-sufficient through time. Every month we can see a huge amount of fresh products that grow as a result of the very fertile land. Our team has found a way to face hunger and chronic infant malnutrition by giving them the tools to produce fresh products as well as a higher share of their revenue. We have landed the project in a school with the collaboration of the local authorities. Our vision is to keep replicating the project with the construction of 130 other greenhouses that will go directly to the families in Cunucyacu. In this context, we are delighted to expect Ronny Excel Lema, Co-Initiator of Cultiva Green to DIGISUSTAIN 2024 and further collaborate on global food security. This week, Peace Parks TV is spotlighting a transformative project in Guengo near Parque Nacional de Maputo, benefiting local farmers through conservation-friendly agriculture. Supported by the park, and with funding from the COmON Foundation, the farming community now has tools, knowledge-sharing, and infrastructure to ensure that water flows and crops grow. Crucially, this is reducing their reliance on neighbouring areas for produce, and on charcoal for income. They now have a precious alternative to make a living. Vitally, benefits extend to the wellbeing of, and opportunities for, their families. This initiative is empowering communities with new skills to make a living, and healthy crops which they can take to market. In providing their support, the park is helping ensure that there is food on the table and education for children. Guengo is changing for the better, and highlighting the positive impact of responsible conservation and care, on local people and landscapes!
