West African nations are stepping up and advocating for a robust voluntary carbon market to help fund climate action. The recent letter from the West Africa Alliance emphasises the pivotal role of carbon credits in guiding companies towards sustainable practices. With climate financing still far below needed levels, offset revenues are crucial to supporting communities in the Global South, encouraging conservation and facilitating the transition to clean energy. 📢SUPPORTING CLIMATE FINANCE THROUGH CARBON OFFSETS | A coalition of 10 West African nations is advocating for the inclusion of carbon offsets in corporate climate strategies, highlighting their importance in attracting essential funding for climate and conservation projects. 💹 These nations argue that offsets are crucial for generating finance needed to restore and protect nature and support sustainable economic development to lower the pressure on the ecosystem. 📝 In a letter to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), these countries urge for clear guidance on offsets to boost corporate confidence and investment. What is the role of #carboncredits? The #FT heading says #SBTI steps back from carbon offsets and research tells carbon credits are inefficient. I read the documents, but that is not what the research shows. SBTI thinks it doesn’t give evidence that carbon credits help meet their own net-zero mitigation goals by companies (see https://lnkd.in/erEKtpPs ). Not unexpected! If you send researchers with that question they will not find that evidence. 🤷🏻♂️ Hence, that is the explicit role of #carboncredits: financing faster reductions elsewhere to help meet climate goal in time. Thát should be the evidence looked for and that is the goal worldwide citizens support outcomes. Furthermore, carbon projects differ a lot (from cookstoves to landfill gas etc.) with many decarbonisation and sustainability benefits. 3wIt's a very interesting report that focuses on two important regions for #bluefinance: #MENAT and #APAC. If the same type of trajectory can develop for blue finance that has developed for green bonds (from $11 billion in 2013 to $1 trillion by 2021), it will improve the effectiveness of a lot of other forms of #ClimateFinance.
