Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when approximately 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas to deliver the news that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people were free by executive decree. This is a day for celebration and reflection on our nation’s history, but it’s also a day that we can recommit ourselves to promoting equality. Hoffman is committed to creating a more diverse construction industry because we believe social equity and inclusion make us better builders. Ensuring a diverse workforce is a core component of every Hoffman project – regardless of contract requirements. We have long-standing relationships with programs and organizations that promote diversity and inclusion in the construction trades. We actively engage the subcontracting community to help optimize opportunities for minorities on our projects. We also take a skill building approach to increasing diverse participation in our industry. While it’s good to help a firm get work on a project, we think it’s even better to help them gain the skills that will allow them to grow and prosper over the long-term. We have outreach specialists who provide technical support and mentorship to minority-owned firms. We make sure everyone has a chance to work on our job sites and that firms grow in scope and capacity from experience. Today we celebrate and honor this important day in history, and we reaffirm our company’s commitment to supporting equity and inclusion in the construction industry.

Neither the fanatics nor the faint-hearted are needed. And our duty as a Party is not to our Party alone, but to the nation, and, indeed, to all mankind. Our duty is not merely the preservation of political power but the preservation of peace and freedom. So let us not be petty when our cause is so great. Let us not quarrel amongst ourselves when our Nation's future is at stake. Let us stand together with renewed confidence in our cause -- united in our heritage of the past and our hopes for the future -- and determined that this land we love shall lead all mankind into new frontiers of peace and abundance. -- President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917 - November 22, 1963)

Be brave enough to teach the history they are trying to erase!: On June 22, 1944, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act (USA), known as the GI Bill, to provide financial aid to veterans returning from World War II. The benefits included access to housing, small business loans, employment, and education. While the GI Bill was federal legislation, it was administered by the states, where Jim Crow laws and practices severely limited equal access to the benefits. Here are some questions to consider regarding the GI Bill: Were the benefits for everyone? How many elected officials, opposed to government programs today, benefit from their family having been on the GI Bill? What is the impact of the GI Bill on racial disparities in the United States today?
Happy 80th Birthday, GIBill! On June 22, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, otherwise known as the GI Bill of Rights. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e9qYqNsJ

At the United States Naval Academy, you hear stories about some of our great alumni who have gone on to do incredible things in both personal and professional careers. Admittedly, I didn't know much about President Carter but recent events caused me to do a little more research. I listened to various speakers from televised ceremonies when possible and it was incredible to hear some of the stories people had to share. I could only hope that I can make such an impact where people reflect back so positively on me during my life. By no means was he perfect, but one thing that stands out to me is Carter’s integrity. At the Naval Academy, he was taught that leadership isn’t about power—it’s about doing what’s right, even when it’s hard. We saw that in his presidency, where he focused on human rights, even when it wasn’t the easy or popular choice. It’s rare to see that kind of principle-driven leadership, and Carter had it in spades. Another thing the Academy instilled in him was humility and teamwork. Carter knew you couldn’t achieve much alone, and that listening to others and working together was the key to real progress. He brought that mindset to everything he did, whether it was brokering peace deals or hammering nails for Habitat for Humanity. Even after leaving the White House, Carter never stopped living those Naval Academy values. His commitment to helping others, whether it was eradicating disease or building homes, shows that service isn’t just a job—it’s a way of life. Carter’s time at the Naval Academy helped make him the person we admire today. It’s a great reminder that the lessons we learn early on—about integrity, service, and humility—can shape not just our careers, but our entire lives. For me, he’s a shining example of what it means to live with purpose and make a real difference in the world. Let’s celebrate a life lived with honor, courage, and commitment—and maybe take a moment to think about how we can live out those values in our own lives. 🌟

Memorial Day isn't just a time for barbecues and the unofficial start of summer; it is a profound reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy—and the opportunities those freedoms afford. Just as the brave men and women who served our nation displayed courage and dedication, we, too, must harness these qualities as we embark on our personal and professional journeys of self-improvement. Self-growth requires ambition, resilience, and commitment to forge ahead, just as those heroic individuals did on the front lines for our freedom. As you (we) honor Memorial Day, take a moment to reflect on how the principles of sacrifice and determination can fuel your path to excellence. Remember that the most significant transformations often require small, consistent efforts over time—be it refining a skill, embracing new challenges, or fostering deeper connections in your professional network. In paying tribute to those who dedicated their lives to our nation, let their legacy inspire you to break barriers and elevate your potential. Your ambitions today can become the achievements of tomorrow, and your personal growth can be a testament to the sacrifices of those who came before you. The choices you make now are not just for yourself but your lasting tribute to those who have paved the way for a future of endless possibilities. Each decision, each step towards self-improvement, is a testament to the courage and dedication of those who served our nation. Your choices matter, and they can honor the sacrifices of Memorial Day in a meaningful way.
