#Maersk has picked a yard in southern #China to build its next raft of methanol-fuelled ships. Alphaliner is reporting Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (GWSHI) has won a contract to build a number of 3,500 teu #dualfuel ships for the #Danish carrier. Ultimately, with options, Maersk may order up to 12 ships at the yard with the first ones slated for delivery in 2026 and 2027. The ships are reportedly costing $68m each. “Assuming that 25% of the cost increase is related to the more expensive choice of #methanol, the reported USD 68 M sticker price still means a 38% hike in newbuilding prices over three years,” Alphaliner noted in its most recent weekly report. He added that Indonesia has great opportunities for development in the steel sector. The Indonesian government is focusing on steel production to minimize their dependence on steel imports. The government offers tax incentives for housing to increase production in the construction sector. DXN Steel, one of Indonesia's most important steel producers, announced in September 2023 that it has increased its crude steel capacity to 2023 tons per year at its integrated plant in Central Sulawesi province. Indonesia will boast Southeast Asia's largest copper foil facility. PT Hailiang Nova Material Indonesia, one of the world's major copper pipe and rod producers, is to invest US$860 million in a copper foil factory in the Gresik Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Copper foil is one of the primary raw materials used in the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. With the addition of this factory, Gresik SEZ will further develop the raw mineral processing and electric vehicle production ecosystem. Indonesian President Joko Widodo attended the groundbreaking celebration for PT Hailiang Nova Material Indonesia, emphasizing the importance of downstream production and beginning to phase out raw material exports. The Gresik SEZ has attracted significant investment, particularly the PT Freeport Indonesia Smelter with an investment value of US$ 3 billion, which will produce copper cathodes with a capacity of 1.7 million tons per year. PT Hailiang Nova Material Indonesia will purchase PT Freeport Indonesia products, with the final result being Copper Foil, which is used as a raw material in lithium-ion batteries.
