Planetary health is all about recognizing how closely our well-being is tied to the health of the planet. Sustainable and ethical healthcare practices play a crucial role in this connection. By focusing on resource efficiency, waste reduction, and renewable energy, sustainable healthcare can significantly lower its environmental impact. Ethical practices, on the other hand, ensure that everyone has fair access to healthcare and promote a sense of responsibility towards our environment. Healthcare systems generate a lot of waste and greenhouse gases, contributing to environmental degradation. Read more here. https://lnkd.in/gx-gph47

As we work towards a healthier world, it's essential to recognize how the healthcare sector itself influences our planet's health. Healthcare facilities, medications, medical waste, and energy use all contribute to climate change, often unintentionally. 🏥 Healthcare's Carbon Footprint: The healthcare industry accounts for nearly 4-5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. From the energy used in hospitals to the production and disposal of medical equipment, our efforts to save lives can simultaneously harm the environment. 💡 Sustainable Solutions: - Embracing renewable energy sources in healthcare facilities. - Reducing single-use plastics and promoting eco-friendly alternatives. - Prioritizing telemedicine where possible to reduce transportation-related emissions. - Optimizing supply chains to minimize waste and energy consumption. 🌱 Why It Matters: A degraded environment leads to more health problems—poor air quality, water scarcity, and the spread of vector-borne diseases. By reducing healthcare's environmental impact, we are not only fighting climate change but also improving global public health. Together, we can build a healthcare system that heals both people and the planet. 🌿💪 We must do more. #ClimateChange #Healthcare #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #PublicHealth #GreenHealthcare #wemustdomore

Implementing and maintaining environmentally sustainable practices in healthcare can be challenging. We gathered findings from various use cases across the literature to identify the barriers and enablers of success. Based on these real-life examples, and while considering contextual factors, a roadmap was developed to support the leadership team in healthcare. Each step in the roadmap is defined with a set of questions executives should ask themselves when going through the process. #sustainability #healthcare #planetaryhealth

🌏 The healthcare sector isn't just about healing, it's also a significant contributor to global emissions. Yet, over 80 countries are stepping up to create sustainable, low-carbon health systems. Learn more about this crucial issue and our efforts at Serres Global to address it in our latest blog post. #Healthcare #Sustainability #Emissions
The healthcare sector plays a critical role in society's well-being, but did you know that it is also responsible for 5-10% of global emissions? The impact of these emissions is not just environmental, they also affect people's health worldwide. However, there's hope: over 80 countries have committed to developing sustainable, climate-resilient, low carbon health systems. 🌏 Our latest blog post delves into the environmental impact of the healthcare industry, the challenges it faces in becoming carbon neutral, and the steps we at Serres are taking on our part to tackle these issues. Want to know what can be done to reduce greenhouse gas #emissions in #healthcare? Check out my first international publication, 'Green health: how to decarbonise global healthcare systems.' 🏥 🌱 I reviewed the literature for possible actions that healthcare workers and decision-makers can take to lower the climate footprint of healthcare systems. I found that healthcare system emissions have abundant potential to decrease, for example, by reducing emissions from transportation, anaesthesia, energy, travel, the supply chain and clinical practices. Practical actions at the personal and organisational levels can be supported by promoting the planetary health literacy of healthcare workers, patients, and their caregivers, as well as system changes that need to be implemented at a higher level. Special thanks to my co-authors Angela Brand and Julien Venne! Find the open-access article here: https://lnkd.in/dMntPCrK I highly recommend you look at this Excel sheet, which can be found in the supplementary material - a detailed breakdown of actions to decarbonise healthcare systems: https://lnkd.in/diJvgdNC

"Nature is the physician of all physicians" - Hippocrates #environmentalhealthday It has been 10 years since I took the Hippocratic Oath, and what a decade it has been! We've made tremendous progress in healthcare, leveraging technology and evidence-based medicine to improve patient outcomes. However, there is a stark decline seen in environmental health. Air pollution, lack of access to clean water, drought, heat stress, and extreme weather events are exacerbating health issues, particularly for vulnerable populations. Some Alarming Statistics: 📌24% of global diseases are caused by environmental factors (World Health Organization) 📌 1 in 8 global deaths linked to fine particulate matter (2.5) Air Pollution 📌13 million deaths annually are attributed to environmental factors (WHO) 📌The annual economic burden of environmental health impacts is a staggering $2.5 trillion (Lancet Commission) The connection between human health and environmental health is complex and multifaceted. Rising health concerns can overwhelm healthcare systems, as we very recently saw during the COVID-19 pandemic. While public health systems and disaster management cells address this, it is imperative that Global Action on Sustainable Development and a Regenerative Circular Economy sees more momentum than it did in the past decade. Sustainable transformation matters to reduce health risks, lower healthcare costs, provide food security, foster climate-resilience and enhance adaptation. This World Environmental Health day we are bound to take an oath to promote planetary well-being for the sustenance of humans and all living beings. Let's connect and collaborate on Circular Economy and Regenerative Design initiatives and do share your thoughts and experiences in the comments. PS - As a medical professional having once solely focused on symptomatic treatment, the epiphany of realising this intricate relationship led to a transformative journey of addressing the planetary determinants of health.
