Found this introductory paragraph in chapter 4 of Heberlein's 2012 book: Navigating Environmental Attitudes, very insightful. Thinking about it in the context of social and environmental psychology, it vividly depicts the paradox between people's expressed beliefs and their actual actions. Mirroring Heberlein's narrative about Aldo Leopold, who wrote eloquently about wolf conservation but voted for bounties on wolves, consider these paradoxes: 1. We vehemently condemn bad governance, yet often vote for candidates with questionable character. Why? Factors like tribalism, party loyalty, personal bias, or even unfounded hatred for opponents can override rational decision-making. 2. Some climate change advocates sometimes engage in behaviors that contribute to the very thing they are advocating against- global warming. Why? Because in real life, convenience often trumps ideals. Also, there could be a feeling that individual actions are so infinitesimal in the grand scheme of things or the sheer difficulty of breaking ingrained habits. Now the question: Does attitude change matter if it doesn't translate to behavior? The "cognitive fix" - educating people about the right things to do - is a start. But it's clearly not enough. Without deliberate and consistent actions to match our newfound values, we risk perpetuating the very issues we aim to solve. More questions: 1. How can we ensure that increased awareness and knowledge lead to meaningful action? 2. What strategies have you found effective in aligning your behaviors with your values, both personally and in your organization? 3. There is hope. While it’s wild to see the vision for a consumerist society written so blatantly, we can reverse the mistakes we’ve collectively made and create a better future for us all. This quote was brought to my attention by one of the founders of Supercyclers, sarah K. at last night’s Transition Bondi guest dinner. While this depiction is bleak, we have the choice to change course and live the lives most of us pine for. As we discussed as a group last night, this period of consumerism is a blip in the context of the anthropocene (the age of humans). As humans we are such a creative and innovative species and we’ve overcome huge obstacles and challenges in our past. This time is no different. Another topic of conversation that I feel is important to share widely is one shared by Tim Hollo in his book ‘Living Democracy’. We are trapped in inaction as we find it hard to deliberate with others who don’t see things the same way that we do. However, this can be our greatest asset as we need diversity in thought and experience to design the right path forward. We don’t need to pick sides anymore, we just need to come together openly and co-design what we want our futures to look like. Our environmental problems are not firstly a scientific or legal problem. They are firstly a sacredness problem. Research, technology, investment, regulation: none of it is going to solve the challenges we face if we don't change our attitude, posture and approach to nature at a more cosmic level. Because those ideas are just just tactics. And tactics rely on a worldview. If we don't view it with more awe and wonder; as playing a part in a more cosmic story; or as something that is not just a creature or a canopy but a teacher, a guide, a witness and a reflection of something more majestic, we will always fall short. Hoping for a regenerative economy without midwifing a wide scale sense of re-enchantment is a huge ask. Potentially an impossible one. It is akin to the difference between two societies where one sees children as resources to protect and one where they are viewed as carrying an intrinsic, divine spark that demands cherishing for cherishing's sake. So, to shoehorn in a pop reference here if you like your celebrity wisdom, you can look to the fella named after what sounds like a wilderness retreat - Justin Timberlake - because, after all, he did say (almost): "I'm bringing sacred back. Yeah. Them other boys don't know how to act. Yeah." Well, trying to at least. A must listen deep dive into many perspectives into "progress" Current mainstream narratives sell the story that progress is synonymous with betterment, and that the world becomes better for everyone as GDP and economies continue to grow. Yet, this is an incomplete portrayal that leaves out the dark sides of advancement. What are the implications when only the victors of history write the narratives of progress and define societal values? What are the value systems embedded in our institutions and policies, and how do they reinforce the need for ongoing growth at the expense of the natural world and human well-being? Finally, how do we change these dynamics to form a new, holistic definition of progress that accounts for the connectedness of our planet to the health of our minds, bodies, and communities?
