What’s up with Costco’s toilet paper? It’s the little things in your product and business that matter. Even toilet paper. I’ve been a Costco fan for a long time, a loyal member, and I spend more money at Costco than any other retail store, including Amazon. But lately, they’ve given me a reason not to trust them. I know it may sound silly, but I just kind of assumed all their basic products were quality. Over the last year, their toilet paper has gone in the crapper—pun intended. Am I going to stop shopping at Costco? Probably not. But now I'll think twice before buying any product they offer. And this will probably have some impact on how much I spend. It's a good reminder of how important it is for businesses to maintain quality in every aspect of their product. You can't let your guard down or give users any reason to lose trust. Costco has impulse buying perfectly mapped out. Just in time for spring, patio furniture shows up. Our simple trip to pick up some supplements and food ended up with a small patio set. The challenge with Costco impulse buying: the small car we showed up in. Physics laws about car space and furniture cannot be violated. I stayed behind while we switched cars, and everything got home OK. The best part was people watching - carrying out 5-6 pizzas and handfuls of cookies. Life Lesson: Expect things to take longer than expected, especially when furniture and moving are involved. #impulsebuying #smallcarfurniture

These chicken bags are going to cost Costco Wholesale so much money. Why do you grab a cart when you come just to buy chicken? Because the bottom of the old packaging is hot and it’s awkward to carry one, let alone two and tends to require both hands. What do you do with a cart? You add more stuff into the cart. With the bag, you have no reason to grab a cart. You can literally just walk in, grab two bags with one hand and walk straight back to the register because they’re so easy to carry. Not a smart design for a product that is a loss leader intended to get a shopper to buy more in the store. Will Costco’s average cart value drop immensely? You’re sure of it! Could this change make Costco miss target earnings? I don’t know, but I wouldn’t want to wait and find out… #speculation

The power of Costco Wholesale: When Costco decides to get serious about a product, competitors are forced to react. Like lots of products, the cost of plastic storage bins has skyrocketed. Something that cost $7-9 just a few years ago, might be $12-17, depending what store you are at. Then about a month ago, every Costco was loaded with pallets of yellow and black bins, at $8.99 each with a $1 off coupon per. $7.99 each! I bought 10 that day, and really didn't even need them. I just couldn't help myself. So then over the next weeks, cruising stores as a hobby to see trends like my buddy John Andrews, I noticed everyone lowering prices: The Home Depot on sale for $9.99, Walmart price buster deal was $12, and so on. It used to piss me off when someone with a similar product or service used to copy a campaign, service offering, marketing message, whatever. Now however, I take it as a compliment and a form of flattery. They are trying to keep up with us. Why? We are the best at what we do.
