Sport has the power to drive positive change and respect for human rights. Yet the potential for adverse #humanrights impacts is also wide-range. Amongst the late nights and early morning viewing of Aussies going for gold 🏅, we've found some time to review the modern slavery statements of Australian sporting organisations. See below for our insights and recommendations ⬇ As Australia continues on the 'golden decade' to #Brisbane2032, now is a good time for Australian sporting organisations to assess their human rights risk management approach, including in relation to #modernslavery. #bizhumanrights #ESG #sustainability

❗ NEW ANALYSIS: MODERN SLAVERY REPORTING BY SPORTING ORGANISATIONS ❗ 🏅 As the excitement of the Paris #Olympics captures our attention, it’s an important time to consider how sport can impact human rights and the role of sporting organisations and their partners, including sponsors, in identifying and addressing these impacts. 🌎 Sporting events can transcend borders, languages and cultures. They can unite people and advance human rights. Yet the delivery of sporting events of all shapes and sizes can also bring significant human rights challenges. From grassroots organisations to global mega-sporting events, the potential impact of sporting events on human rights is wide reaching.  🥅 Sporting organisations are increasingly recognising their responsibility to respect human rights, as outlined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. This includes taking steps to integrate human rights considerations into their own activities and business relationships. 🛑 An important human rights issue requiring attention from the sporting community, both in Australia and around the world, is the effective management of #modernslavery risks throughout sporting organisations’ operations and supply chains. 📈 We analysed modern slavery statements from eighteen Australian sporting teams, organisations and governing bodies that publicly report under the Australian Modern Slavery Act.  🔦 We found that while some sporting organisations report taking concrete actions to respect specific human rights such as in the area of diversity and inclusion, many appear to be taking limited steps to identify, manage and report on modern slavery risks. Rather than ‘stepping up to the plate’ there is a risk that Australian sporting organisations have ‘taken their eye off the ball’ when it comes to their modern slavery responses.  📃 See our analysis here for more details and sporting puns 😉: https://lnkd.in/gN_ezqcg #bizhumanrights #sport #modernslavery
