Cambridge University Hospital Virtual Ward Implementation Model," Gemma Czech, lead clinical nurse for Virtual Wards, and Andrew Bailey, Virtual Ward Operations Manager at Cambridge University Hospital, shared their experiences pioneering Cambridge University Hospital's Virtual Ward implementation. Achieving 97% satisfaction rates, the virtual ward at Cambridge University Hospital has exceeded expectations, demonstrating tangible benefits such as a substantial reduction in the cost of bed days, enhanced recovery outcomes, and a notable decrease in patient deconditioning. With the virtual ward evolving into an integral part of routine patient care at Cambridge University Hospital, the team plans to expand to 120 beds in the next financial year and explore virtual care for children's services. Main takeaways- these are true partners, we need to embrace the EPCC partnership and treat them like cluster partners. Learn their buisness, meet often, share best practices, assist with opportunities and collaborate on new and innovative ideas on how to improve our care continuums, but most of all….tell the story. We have had significant growth in both Skilled nursing and HH Hospice we need to ensure our new employees know this relationship! So….tell the story!

MLK, JR. COMMUNITY HOSPITAL in Los Angeles is on the brink of closure due to overwhelming patient volumes exceeding its capacity. During a June 7 press conference, community representatives, state lawmakers, and hospital staff voiced concerns about the hospital's critical status. California Assemblymember Mike Gipson highlighted that MLKCH is one of the last facilities providing essential services in the area but is struggling to remain open. Last November, hospital leaders warned that they might run out of funds by early 2024. The hospital also faces a severe shortage of maternity care services in South Los Angeles, with MLKCH being one of the few to maintain a maternity ward. Despite state funding at its opening in 2015, the hospital's emergency department saw 120,000 annual visits in 2023, far exceeding the projected 30,000. With 76% of visits from Medi-Cal, which underpays for care, the hospital loses money on each visit. Without increased state funding, it could run out of operational revenue by early 2025. This situation highlights the critical need for sustainable funding and capacity management in safety net hospitals. To avoid similar issues, our team ensures financial stability through diversified funding sources, enhances operational efficiency, and advocates for fair reimbursement policies to maintain essential healthcare services for underserved communities. This week, I marched in solidarity with my Emergency Medicine colleagues at Ascension St. John hosital 🏥 on Moross I was born at St. John, my mom worked there as a labor and delivery nurse, and I trained in the emergency medicine department during my fourth year at Wayne State University School of Medicine St. John’s Hospital 🏥 and Emergency Department is a critical part of our east side community serving Detroit, Grosse Pointe, SCS, Eastpointe etc… That is why I’m extremely saddened by the corporatization of the emergency medical services there 💰 It's alarming to see how nationwide, emergency medicine staffing agencies are being bought out by private equity groups, whose primary focus tends to be on profits rather than patient care. This shift can have profound implications for all of us. Longer wait times, overworked healthcare professionals, and compromised patient outcomes are just a few of the potential consequences. It's disheartening to know that according to NBC News, nearly 40% of U.S. hospital emergency departments are now overseen, staffed, or managed by companies owned by private-equity firms. Our healthcare system should prioritize people over profits. It's essential that we come together as a community to raise awareness and advocate for change. Our voices matter, and by speaking up, we can push for policies that prioritize patient well-being and support our dedicated healthcare professionals. Let's start a conversation.
