Dr. Daghni Rajasingam puts it perfectly: “In making care safer for this group of women, we will make it better for all women.” Exactly! #HealthEquity is not a zero sum game. Data show when we design solutions for the marginalized and excluded and build from there, we can end up with a system that confers a benefit to us all. There are examples of this concept–called Targeted Universalism–everywhere. Seat belts developed originally to protect children have now saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of adults and kids. Smoking laws designed initially to protect flight attendants, and later to protect restaurant and bar workers, have now reduced tobacco consumption by 67% since 1965. Closed captioning designed for people with hearing loss is now used by the masses to help with comprehension. What we’re up against today is a deeply held belief that when you provide an advantage to one group it hurts the rest. That such an advantage is unfair to others. This accords with the belief that there is a small and fixed pie of available resources that we must all compete for, but as the examples above illustrate, giving an advantage to one group need not disadvantage the rest. In fact, using targeted strategies can get us to universal goals. This Learning and Action Network recently launched by NHS Race & Health Observatory, IHI, and The Health Foundation–in collaboration with 9 health systems–is designed to address stark disparities in maternal, perinatal, and neonatal health outcomes for women from Black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds. “In making care safer for this group of women, we will make it better for all women.” I’m excited to follow the work and see how outcomes for all birthing people rise together. #maternalhealth
