Attorneys are extremely busy—especially the better ones—so they HAVE to prioritize their work. It is usually the case that some client files will be treated more urgently than others. One thing you can do to boost your issue’s priority from the very beginning of the attorney-client relationship is to hire an attorney who is REFERRED to you (instead of one you find in the phone book or a simple internet search). The stronger the ties between the referring source and the candidate attorney, the better. An attorney serving a client referred from an important connection will probably be mindful of the fact that his or her performance will affect TWO significant relationships (one with you and one with the referring source) instead of just one. Of course, sometimes the attorney you should engage won’t come from a referral. I have hired superb legal counsel that I found online. There are a multitude of factors to consider in hiring legal counsel—the finding method is just one of many you should keep in mind.

*Unless you are interested in a career in Legal Marketing & BD then I’d probably skip right on. Easter is over, year-end is pretty much gone so now’s the time to start thinking about what’s next - new beginning, new start …new career? So I thought it worth giving you a bit of an overview of the current market – at least as far as Legal Marketing & BD goes. It has been a strange market on the whole for a little while. Incredibly busy at one end – Exec and Manager level and fairly quiet (except for the occasional exception) at the senior end – Senior Manager, Head of and Director. Within the wider marketing and BD umbrella some areas are busier than others: ·        Client Development / Relationship / Account Management is very much the hot topic as firms have (on the whole) bundled that role into the wider Business Development role for a long time. This is being pushed not only internally but from the larger clients who are starting to demand clarity of who their “account manager” will be outside of the customary Partner. ·        Bid roles remain highly contested and highly demanded. The main issue here is supply and demand. Most Law firms want to bring in experienced managers, unfortunately, not a lot of thought goes into why those people would want to take that sideways move. ·        Business Development roles will always be in demand. Relative to “Marketing” positions, BD is still a new function and as such teams are developing and being re-defined all the time. ·        Law firm experienced junior executives with 12 – 24 months of marketing experience will always find a role whether that remains in marketing or is a move into BD/Client development there will constantly be a requirement. Unfortunately, with all these roles there remains the usual reluctance to look outside of the sector. Some cultural issues can make this understandable but all too often quality is being overlooked in favor of the proven legal experience, sometimes to the extent that a role can be open for 6 months or longer as the hiring team avoids any sniff of risk. All is not closed off entirely though and you should not be put off applying if you have experience in other professional services, financial services or business services. There are some signs that it is starting to pick up at the senior end and whilst the junior roles have slowed slightly this is more likely to be seasonal rather than a significant change in the market demand.
