Finding the Right Fit: Undergraduate College and Major Exploration On April 17, AUAF hosted a virtual workshop "Finding the Right Fit: Undergraduate College and Major Exploration," by Sydney Donaldson, who is a former academic advisor in the US college admission specialist with studies in the US and abroad. The session guided the attendees in navigating the complexities of the college application process in the United States and assist them in determining the best fit for their academic, social, financial, and personal needs. Additionally, the concept of choosing a college major was explained, emphasizing that it is a structured program of study centered around a specific discipline. High-demand majors such as business, healthcare administration, nursing, information technology, and engineering were highlighted, along with the importance of considering career paths and internship opportunities. The session concluded with the attendees asking questions regarding college requirements and application processes in the US. Miss Donaldson addressed these inquiries, further assisting attendees in their college exploration journey. Overall, the workshop served as a valuable resource for students embarking on their college search and application journey, equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to make informed decisions about their higher education endeavors.

Title: Admissions Intern What I did: I aided in the organization and updating of office procedures. I assisted in the planning and confirmation of events for prospective students. I worked along side professional staff to improve daily operations and programming. What I liked: I enjoyed getting a deeper look into higher education and the role admissions plays in a university. Currently, Nogosa is an intern at William Blair! 💙What was DMSF’s impact on you? 💛 Receiving the DMSF scholarship changed my life in ways I can't even describe. The overall knowledge from experiencing an entirely different racial environment, and socioeconomic environment was extremely insightful. The opportunity to live on my own was beneficial, and the opportunity to play competitive sports in a prep league was also beneficial, as I am now an NCAA collegiate Track & Field athlete. The skills I learned in the summer bridge program for overall interaction with adults and sending emails are skills I still use to this day. The biggest benefit from the DMSF scholarship has been the alumni network with networking and connection opportunities. DMSF does a great job with putting alums in good networking environments, as Mr. Nick Cross provides us with webinars for internship opportunities at firms with strong DMSF representation. Finally, DMSF has a multitude of resources if needed in order to improve your overall health and happiness. 💙For you, what does it mean to be a Murphy Scholar? 💛Being a Murphy Scholar means to not only be a leader, but to be an academic weapon and to build good connections with those within and outside of your comfort zones. 💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? 💛 I would advise to connect with people outside of your comfort zone more. MDRC report highlights new findings from a random assignment evaluation of the first seven P-TECH Grades 9–14 schools in New York City. Conducted by a Network research team at MDRC, the study is the first rigorous evaluation of the P-TECH model and provides findings related to impact, implementation, and costs. P-TECH 9–14 schools collaborate with local colleges to enable students to earn a high school diploma within four years followed by a cost-free, industry-recognized associate’s degree. During the six-year program, employer partners provide students with work-based learning experiences such as internships, mentoring, and job shadowing. This report provides three years of post-high school follow-up, including during the pandemic. Previous reports from the study showed that P-TECH students earned more credits, passed more New York State Regents exams, and were much more likely to take college courses and earn college credits in high school than comparison group students. New findings in this report indicate that the P-TECH model increased students' postsecondary degree completion, particularly for male students, and boosted internship and dual enrollment rates, even during the pandemic. We don’t have enough young people coming up through the education system aware of the opportunities available in physics to meet the growing demand for all sorts of exciting careers. Many don’t realise that more than half (53%) of physics-demanding jobs do not require a degree level qualification, and that physics-related apprenticeships could unlock a wide range of opportunities.   Last year, however, our report 'Solving Skills: Powering growth through physics related apprenticeships', highlighted a range of barriers to individuals and employers being able to make the most of the apprenticeship systems across UK and Ireland.    That’s why I’m hugely proud of the team across IOP for pulling together our just launched follow-up report, 'Solving Skills One Year On: Partnerships powering apprenticeships'. This collection of brilliant case studies from across UK and Ireland highlights the potential of local and regional organisations working together in partnership to overcome many of these barriers.   We hope it might help act as a source of inspiration for organisations who, to date, may have been put off from considering apprenticeships as a key part of the solution to their skills gap. #IOPSolvingSkills
