Excellent summary and well worth reading regardless of one’s background.
Want to know more about how the U.S. grid is planned and regulated? Joe DeLosa III, Prof. Paul Joskow, and I have summarized it in this new Working Paper by the MIT - Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research. The U.S. regulation of the high-voltage transmission grid is highly complex and, as a result, generally poorly understood. Yet, understanding and improving it is critical to planning the grid we need -- one that can reliably and cost-effectively support the rapidly accelerating energy transition. Something I love about Veriten is its ability to report on energy issues in a politically agnostic way. Because they are a research, investing, and strategy firm that draws from its energy-focused network and knowledge platform they are able to bring diverse perspectives to the discussion. Something that becomes increasingly frustrating is when the #politics of it all interferes with people's ability to understand certain realities. In this instance, that there is a "disconnect between the perceived benefits of green energy policies and the reality of high #energycosts." This episode focuses specifically on how Californians are reacting to rising energy costs, with some leaving the state due to #affordabilityissues. I post this here in hopes of spurring conversation, not criticizing #greenenergy or any of the #climategoals its proponents seek to achieve. If there is any chance that California is serving as an #energy bellweather for other states, including #Texas, this is a topic we should all be following and educating ourselves and each other on. #climate #resillience #electricgrid #reliability #affordability #renewableenergy #greenhousegas #themoreyouknow #accountability #electricity
One of the issues that we have become fascinated with over the last couple of years is #power: power #availability, power #costs, power #reliability, #growth in #demand for power, and the overall #complexity of our power systems. We’ve also become extremely interested in how these power issues are meaningfully affecting states, countries and industries. With all of that in mind, we read with particular interest recent publications from today’s COBT guest, Susan Shelley, Columnist and Member of the Editorial Board for the Southern California News Group. Susan covers #local, #state and #national issues across eleven daily papers including the Los Angeles Daily News, the Orange County Register, the Riverside Press-Enterprise and the Long Beach Press-Telegram. Much of the #energytransition discussion is around #decarbonization and economic justice, extremely important and complicated topics. What is often missing is an examination of the costs of various decarbonization alternatives and the ways in which those choices could be hitting different segments of society. On today’s COBT, we greatly enjoyed discussing with Susan California’s power choices and talking about their costs and their debatable benefits.

As the U.S. energy grid grows, thousands of new miles of transmission lines must be built every year. Here’s why openness to local concerns may be important for ensuring the expansion happens in a timely fashion.

💡 Highlights 💡 from new article ‘How much storage do we need in a fully electrified future?’ by Greg Marsden Elizabeth Shove and me: -Current approaches to estimating future storage needs are challenged. -Greater attention is needed to the temporality and spatiality of demand. -There is a false equivalence between storage and demand side management. -Patterns of demand are changing and matter to what is assumed for storage. -Greater integrations with scenarios of social futures would benefit storage research. https://lnkd.in/e8vfEkpZ Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC)

High-quality research on public opinion is important to help policy makers get a clearer picture of the Canadian public’s views on energy and the environment. And that’s why we ran a series of articles examining public opinion on these important issues, based on work by the University of Ottawa’s Positive Energy program and Nanos Research. The trio of articles, by Monica Gattinger from the University of Ottawa, can be accessed below. Just click on the links to access each article: Part 1 focuses on climate ambition and views on oil and gas: https://lnkd.in/g5r9GwQ6 Part 2 digs into views on electricity and opinions about energy affordability, reliability, safety and emissions reductions in the years ahead: https://lnkd.in/gMCnvyws Part 3 examines Canadians’ views on government performance on key energy and climate issues: https://lnkd.in/gxwabE_i #energy #cleanenergy #cleantech #canada #oilandgas Terry Jbeili Stephen Marsters David Hood Andrea Hood Bill Whitelaw Paul Harris

Pennsylvania is an economic and energy powerhouse. To help grow our energy economy and secure our future, we need smart, consistent policies in place. In a letter to the editor of the Morning Call, I explain why policymakers should prioritize smart energy policy, and what can be done to unleash American energy.
