Along with our community, we are saddened by the passing of Former USAA CEO Josue “Joe” Robles Jr., a visionary leader and compassionate individual who believed in giving back to the community. His support and stewardship have significantly impacted numerous organizations, including ours at the San Antonio Food Bank. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who were moved by his legacy. He will be greatly missed, but his spirit of generosity and leadership will continue to inspire us.

Born in 1910, Margaret Dunning learned to drive at age 8 and happened to live next door to Henry Ford where her love of cars blossomed. Her prized possession? A 1930 Packard Roadster. She studied for two years at the University of Michigan but was forced to drop out at the height of the Great Depression when her family needed help to keep the family business afloat. During World War II, Margaret volunteered in Plymouth’s Red Cross motor pool, driving a truck. From 1962 to 1984, Margaret served on the board of Community Federal Credit Union, including 19 years as president. Under her leadership, the Credit Union increased its assets from $1 million to $40 million. She challenged the status quo in male-dominated industries her entire life. Margaret passed away just before her 105th birthday. She changed her own oil and spark plugs until the very end. “I love the old cars,” she once said. “I love the smell of gasoline. It runs in my veins.” What an incredible life she lead!

During slavery, benevolent societies were formed by the enslaved as a way to care for the sick and bury the dead with dignity. On April 17, 1787, Richard Allen and Absalom Jones formed the Free African Society in #Philadelphia to provide mutual aid and self-help. It was the forerunner of the first insurance company organized and owned by Blacks in the United States, the African Insurance Company. Organized in 1810 in #Philadelphia, the African Insurance Company lasted only three years, but the early model was adopted by many successful Black-owned insurance companies in the post-Civil War era. Juneteenth marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas. It is a symbol of freedom and progress. The success of Black-owned insurance companies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries continued the freedom celebrated on Juneteenth, moving from physical freedom to economic empowerment and financial autonomy. Considering the origins of Black insurance in the United States, it is only fitting that The Black Friday Network/Ako Insurance Consulting host our next Black Friday event in #Philadelphia in collaboration with the NAAIA Philadelphia. To honor the great legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I am excited to share that the National Trust's African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund is investing $4 million to help protect 31 historic Black churches across the country. While Black churches stand as living monuments of faith, resilience, and achievement, many are facing significant preservation challenges. That's why the Action Fund, and our parters at #LillyEndowmentInc, are committed to serving as a national resource that advocates on behalf of these sacred spaces. We are providing not only the necessary funds but also the technical preservation expertise to help these churches continue their mission, strengthen their communities and drive meaningful societal change. Our 2024 Preserving Black Churches cohort joins a growing network of more than 70 grantees where the Action Fund has been honored to invest over $8 million since launching the program in 2022.
