For clarity, we’re not referring to basketball, but the fact that the South Campus Residence Hall at the University of Connecticut is currently the largest NeoLith sintered stone rainscreen project in the U.S.
The pace of construction is rapid at the new dormitory project at the main campus in Storrs with the emphasis on the wet masonry first, owing to the typical seasonal climate conditions in New England.
The architectural team of Sasaki from Boston (design architect) and Newman Architects from New Haven (architect of record) selected the Jura stone finish to recreate the look of a locally quarried but porous natural stone. The extremely low water absorption of sintered stone means it is impervious to freeze/thaw. The system uses a concealed, mechanically attachment detail that is simple and lightweight.
The UConn dormitory project replaces the Chase Center -- home of the Golden State Warriors-- as the largest NeoLith project in the U.S.
So, maybe it is basketball related after all.

When we talk about constructing a 22-story building with Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), the common reaction is, “That can’t be possible.” Our response? “It can.” As long as it adheres to the building code, the potential of CLT is immense.
The rise of CLT in high-rise construction is evident with several notable examples around the world. The Mjøstårnet in Norway, reaching 85.4 meters, was the tallest timber building in the world at its completion. In North America, projects like the 19-story Ascent in Milwaukee and the 18-story Brock Commons Tallwood House in Vancouver highlight the growing acceptance and potential of mass timber in high-rise construction. Architects and engineers are increasingly recognizing the potential of CLT for tall buildings. Andrew Waugh, a UK architect, states, “Re-learning how to build in timber—and how to build tall with the new engineered timbers that the 21st-century technologies allow—will be fundamental to our future”. Similarly, Ralph Austin, president of Seagate Structures, emphasizes the efficiency of CLT, noting that a 17-story building was completed in just nine weeks with only ten workers, showcasing the material’s quick construction benefits.
The advantages of CLT are clear: it provides a sustainable, efficient, and strong alternative to traditional building materials, making the construction of tall buildings and even entire cities not only possible but also beneficial for the environment and urban development.

In the June issue of Ascent – Precast Protects Life – several projects showcase the longevity, resiliency, life safety, and robust construction aspects of #precastconcrete.
New York City Fire Department Rescue Company 2, Brooklyn, NY, is a 21,400-ft2 total-precast building designed by Studio Gang under the New York City Department of Design and Construction’s Project Excellence Program. The fire and rescue workers use the building to simulate a wide range of urban rescues.
According to Rodia Valladares, design principal at Studio Gang, the façade had to be sturdy enough to withstand the abuse of the training exercises and stay crisp looking over time. “We wanted a solution that would provide structure, insulation, and envelope in one material.”

Adding to its growing portfolio of mass timber buildings, Hines opened T3 ATX Eastside in Austin. Sharing some of the triumphs and challenges of this unique project, Cherise Lakeside, FCSI, interviewed Bobby Larson, Senior Associate, DLR Group.
The design team decided to expose some the exterior timber. Consequently, the natural greying of the wood over time will help the new building better blend into its surrounding environment.
In embracing the local context, Laron’s team selected materials and textures to compliment the exposed timber including leather, blackened steel and brick.
“Their natural texture, colors and patterns with slight variation fit with the timber structure,” explains Larson.
Another issue with mass timber is negotiating the permitting process for the structural requirements, fire protection, acoustics, etc., particularly when jurisdictions are not so familiar with this building type.
“We try and meet with the city early in the project and go over the code justifications to make sure we both understand the code the same way. Then once we get into permitting, we can head off a lot of questions,” he relates.
