Why the Hospitality Industry is one of the best places to make your career... The picture looks old - it is. 38 years to be exact, where I was receiving my 10-year employment pin (a tradition back then) - making today my 48th year in what was once referred to as the "food service industry". It is now more appropriately known as "the hospitality industry". And what an place it is. I am confronted with people all the time that barely know this industry exists. Last week, we met this wonderful, enthusiastic waiter, Barron. Each dish he described, made you want to order it. His smile was contagious. He was upbeat and fun and looking for the next step into building a career. He mentioned real estate. I suggested the hospitality industry - as he was already dipping his toe into it and it was an ocean of possibilities. Like many, he had no idea how big or diverse it was. The Cambridge dictionary describes hospitality as: the act of being friendly and welcoming to guests and visitors. Society for Hospitality and Foodservice (SHFM) Foundation realized this years ago when they changed their name from SFM (society of food management) to what it is today, because they realized the success of food management is anchored in being friendly and welcoming. Here's what I've learned about the hospitality industry: *It's filled with incredible people *Many of those people are willing to mentor others *It is one of the few industries that has multiple levels to work in - if someone is comfortable in a middle management position and doesn't aspire to climb the corporate ladder - there's lots of opportunities. *It's not just food - the world of hospitality needs designers, accountants, social media people, sales people, managers, and the list goes on into almost every facet of job descriptions. *There's a ladder to climb if you want to. If you are motivated, hard working, and focused, you can aspire to nearly any position in our industry. *It's a great place to find friends (and in my case, meet a husband :) *It is mostly recession proof - as people want to share food in both the best of times and the worst. *And - according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. In December 2023, employment levels in the hospitality industry reached 16.8 million jobs - meaning there's a job for you. In 1976, at 17 years old, I walked into my first day as a switchboard operator for a company that sold refrigerators. At least that's what I thought. What actually happened, I had stepped out of a fallen house and into the land of Oz. Only this Oz happened to be the hospitality industry. Through these years, I have made incredible friends. I have been given the opportunity to learn and teach. Each one of my successes was due to someone in this industry guiding me along. In return, I guide others. It is an industry that demands much but gives back more - It's an industry that will change one's life. It did mine.

I’m in a job I love, working for a company that values and supports me. My journey in hospitality has been incredible, and I’m now pursuing my Level 5 HR CIPD qualification with exciting opportunities ahead. The State-Of-The-Industry-2024 Report is out and according to the National Restaurant Association, in 2023, restaurant operators reported that 18% of their jobs were filled by people for whom this was the first regular job they ever held. In addition to providing first time job opportunities, many positions are filled by people advancing from other positions within a restaurant. Having received on-the-job training and gaining experience about the operation, they're often ideal candidates for more senior spots. The question is.. how do you build the roadmap and career path to get them there? How do you keep them engaged along the path to advancement?

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙖 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙃𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩.     I recently read an inspiring post by 🦙 Celia Gaze 🦙 MBA about her pride at her son’s first paid job working in a kitchen.    Matthew was probably nervous and maybe a little apprehensive but I’m sure having his mum cheering him on made a real difference.    It made me reflect on my journey. As a teenager one of my first jobs was clearing tables at an Italian-American restaurant in Newburgh NY. I progressed to waiting tables before moving to a job assisting in a bakery in my hometown of Marlboro NY.    At the time, whilst I said these jobs were all about earning some wanted pocket money, it felt exciting working in a busy and bustling ‘grown-up’ environment.  𝙄 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮.   I loved the team dynamics that hospitality offered, especially as a kid that enjoyed playing sports. Teamwork was/is essential in delivery great service.   Whilst my career didn’t continue in hospitality until many many years later, I have no doubt that the work ethic, and teamwork skills I learnt, gave me an edge in the tech sales roles I moved into as an adult.    And now, like more and more people, I can split my careers into chapters…  Chapter 1 - my first jobs in hospitality    Chapter 2 - tech business development and account management   Chapter 3 - founding and growing my own hospitality group Draughts   I’ve come full circle, working in an industry I love where I still get the same buzz from great service and teamwork that I did 30 years ago.    It’s one of the many things I love about hospitality.    You can start as a runner for some needed cash whilst in school or university, or whilst you’re looking for other jobs Or you can start as an apprentice in the kitchen looking to learn your skills and progress.    Or do as I did, and transition back into hospitality in your mid 30’s     The possibilities and routes to progress are (almost) endless.    I see it in my team and love being part of the different journeys people are on.    So, whatever your starting point and whatever your reason for joining the industry, there’s a lot to feel proud and shout about. #hospitality #careers #customerservice

I work in IT, although I have had some experience in hospitality as both a bartender and a cook. What impressed me about this article is the amount of real-time exposure they use to judge whether an applicant is both capable and socially mature enough to join their team. How many people who join IT organizations face this kind of rigorous screening? And would it be worth trying this as an approach to IT placement? On the other hand, maybe some IT organizations already employ these kinds of tactics and screening. Let us know in the comments.
