I'm thrilled to present our project "First Stone", a 3D-printed house submitted to the ICON's Initiative 99 international competition! The project focuses on end users who have difficulty accessing a mortgage. The project is in New Orleans, where the frequency of extreme weather events makes the first house purchase an even more risky investment. Despite its affordability, First Stone is safe, durable, comfortable, and cosy. All dwellings have living area exposures to the east and sleeping area exposures to the west. Large overhangs protect the house from direct sun exposure and rain. Photovoltaic panels are placed on the roof with shared storage batteries, creating an energy community. Furthermore, First Stone is an aggregative system that creates a neighbourhood where residents can live a community life, sharing common services and spaces. The urban aggregation has an aerodynamic shape studied to be hurricane-proof to dissipate the wind. Outdoor spaces on both sides of the house are enclosed by protective organic walls composed of off-site moulded planter blocks.
